Meetings with Tracey every 2 weeks starting June 3.

Things they will be assessing:

  • They will be assessing fit and soft skills as much as technical skills. Attitude, how you take critical feedback. They will probably be looking for that
  • They will be looking for communication gaps - did you keep them abreast of your timelines?

Things to ask:

  • How much communication do they want as far as timeline and progress?
  • Who am I reporting to - only my supervisor or can I give updates with other people?
  • How do you want updates?
  • Mention you are working with career coach at Turing for PD

How to mention the possibility of transitioning?

  • Ok to check with them about it since they mentioned it
  • Ask if the opportunity is still on the table after a certain number of weeks
  • If it's clear they won't give it to me, make it clear you'd like a referral and that you're looking for job searches
  • Make it clear that you're 100% commited to the internship and job possibility
  • Hopefully they'll be transparent with the process

Continuing career goals while at internship

  • Network within company
  • Get a feeling and sense for mentorship - is there someone there who could be a career mentor, say you've always had career mentors at Turing
  • Will attend virtual meetups and hackathons
  • At least look at a job board, especially towards the end. I might find something really cool!
  • Look for one or two I'd be really excited about

Goals for this internship:

  • Ramp up and be indispensible as quickly as possible
  • Be someone they want to work with
  • Be as self-directed as I can - figure out what needs to be done and do a quality job with minimal supervision
  • Anticipate needs as much as I can - be very observant

Areas I've had trouble in the past:

  • Asking the right questions, not just every question
  • Don't let my nerves get the better of me
  • Be prepared to be overworked for a little bit?

Places where I need to grow as a developer:

  • Setting up my environment
  • Untangling Git mistakes

Hey @Tracey-M!

Thanks for checking in! I haven't chatted with then since talking to Jordan earlier this month, who will help train me, but I've built two API's using Python and Django and have taken the Turing class on AWS! I plan on learning AWS Glue this weekend as that's something they use pretty heavily.

The health issues that I was having earlier unfortunately came back, so I haven't been quite as productive getting ready for the internship as I had hoped. I'm wondering if I should let them know about what's been going on medically before the internship or if that would be TMI. I'm unfortunately not sure what it is, though I'm getting a CT scan today, which will hopefully answer some questions.

Talk to you soon!

Best,

Allie

@Tracey-M

Thanks! Tomorrow/Friday works for me if you still have that open. I got my results back from the CT Scan! They didn't find anything, which means that it probably isn't anything terrible, but I still don't have an explanation for my symptoms. If it ends up being an ongoing thing during my internship I'll have to break it to Uplight somehow :-/

Best,

Allie
