Have you tried rebooting the operating system to make sure the hosts file changes take effect? :)
Haven't used this in a while, so it may have stopped working on the latest Chrome versions.
It is totally possible that the update URL and/or the update process altogether have since changed.
You can try to reverse engineer the URL from the binaries or using the network monitoring tools, such as netstat or nettop.
Would really appreciate if somebody researched this and provided an up-to-date updater URL.

Hi.. have you found the URL? I have same issue.. cannot block auto update from etc/hosts method

I tried this command then added 0.0.0.0 tools.google.com at my hosts file.
But chrome can check update still.
Why? Did they changed the way to update?
