Welcome to Hatena Haiku! Congratulations on passing the Humanity Quiz.

Here's some tips to get you started.

POSTING

If you do not include a keyword when you post, it will only show up on 

- your user page
- the "Users I'm following" timeline page

If you do, however, it will show up on the public timeline.

KEYWORDS

Keywords are like topics. Many of them are in Japanese, as presently the majority of users here are Japanese.
You can use any of them that you like! One that I particular enjoy is [[らくがき]], which is Rakugaki - roughly "doodle" or "graffiti".
Several artists post art here each day. You could also post under, for an example, [[My Art]]!

ATTACHING IMAGES

On the desktop version, there is no attach image button. However, you can drag an image file from your desktop onto the textbox where you type.
On the touch version, there's actually an attachment button.

SITE VERSIONS

http://h.hatena.ne.jp/ -- This is the desktop version. It will redirect to /touch/ if you're on a phone.
http://h.hatena.ne.jp/touch/ -- suitable for smartphones

SPAM FILTERING

Yes, there is some spam here. Don't let that deter you, because I have built a handy-dandy solution to this problem!

I recommend installing Tampermonkey (available for Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Opera Next, and Firefox), and then visiting my site,
Hatena Haiku Anti-Spam.

At the top of the page, there is a UserScript that you can install, which will use my service to filter out spam. Don't go without it!

(Note: in periods of heavy spam-posting, you may have to scroll up and down a little bit a few times to get it to load a page with legitimate messages.)

STARS

If you were familiar with Flipnote Hatena, you may wish to adjust the way you give stars. Unlike Flipnote Hatena, users on Hatena services today don't spam a large number of yellow stars. If you enjoyed a post a lot, add a couple yellow stars.

If you happen to have color stars, or signed up as a Japanese-region account and have purchased stars, feel free to use them if you really liked a post!

STAR QUOTES AND COMMENTS

If you select text with your mouse and then add a star, it will be shown when you hover over the star.
If you are Star Friends with a person, an extra box will show up:

Star Friends are two people who have given each other Stars within the past month. It is different from regular replies, and the messages are only visible to Star Friends.


TALKING WITH JAPANESE PEOPLE

Don't be afraid to interact with the folks from Japan. However, I must recommend that you do not use Google Translate to translate your own messages into Japanese. Instead, simply write it in clear, simple English. 

WHAT DO I POST?

Haiku is billed as a "mini-blogging service". You could do things such as: 

- talk about your schedule today
- share what you ate
- complain about school
- play word games -- see [[英語しりとり]] or [[Japanese word-chain game (in English)]]
- talk about recent events
- post pictures of a pretty flower you saw on your way home
- share what music you're listening to
- Chit-chat with others about whatever you're interested in.

ID CALLS

You can send someone a notification by tagging them in a post: e.g id:austinburk. You do not need to do this when replying.

Do not put a large number of Hatena IDs in one post, as you may cause annoyances for others.
