Dead Space 2's creative director denies connection between Unitology and Scientology

The provocative and frightening fictional religion in Dead Space 2 known as Unitology has recently been attracting attention due to what many see as similarities between it and Scientology.

On the surface, the connections can be easy to make; both Unitology and the real-life religion of Scientology represent levels of almost discomforting fanaticism about ideologies that can be difficult for people to understand. Both religions have science fiction-related origins, deep coffers and powerful followers.

However, in an effort to dispel rumors that Unitology was meant to parody Scientology, Visceral Games' Wright Bagwell, creative director for Dead Space 2, spoke to MTV Multiplayer about the perceived similarities. Bagwell said, "We never really approach that discussion with the intention of poking fun at a particular religion, or sort of making a social statement about something that's going on right now."

Wolfenstein receives an extreme indie makeover

Homebrew demakes are pretty popular these days, but one independent developer known as Wonder Tonic has taken nostalgic deconstruction to the extreme with its retro creation, Wolfenstein 1-D.

The company has taken the entirety of the game's maps, items and enemies, and converted them into a lengthy, one-pixel line - complete with all the familiar sound effects and music from the original. This is video game re-interpretation at its most inventive - and also its most ridiculous.

Blizzard cracks down on World of Warcraft gold sellers

In an appeal to online banking company Paypal, Blizzard Entertainment is hoping to knuckle down on illegal payment transactions within its MMOs.

The company's games, particularly World of Warcraft, have become a popular target for shady deals. These have been flooding the game servers through spam advertisements for gold exchanges and purchasable items. By allowing members of the online community to buy in-game gold and items, individuals can make an enormous amount of profit; some even abuse bank information they're given and hack into victims' accounts.

U.S. burn patients are escaping the pain of their injuries by being immersed in the virtual reality of a computer game during their treatment.

The agony of severe burns is an intense and prolonged pain experience, and rehabilitation can be just as painful to the patient as the initial burn. SnowWorld, a simple game set in a wintry 3-D environment, allows them a diversion during care.

SnowWorld is a simple game in which you can throw snowballs at objects (snowmen, igloos, mammoths and penguins) to make them freeze and explode. To play, patients wear a helmet that is hooked up to a virtual world, and wear noise-cancelling headphones which cut off all sights and sounds normally associated with treatment.
