H.264 & VP8 Quality Comparison And Some Words on Future Video Formats

VP8 vs H.264 - Which One is Better?

So I was reading Hacker News and decided to read the comments in the thread about H.265 being approved. Pretty close to the top was this comment about VP9, Google's future video format. I have some words of my own about it and other future formats at the bottom of this post, but what jumped out from the comment to me was this part:

Many have already implemented VP8 (which is also slightly better than h.264 at this point)

The comparison linked to back up that statement is faulty for several reasons, such as not providing the source material used (hell, he doesn't even name the source material), exact encoding settings used (no, some random profiles are not enough), not providing the resulting encodes, only providing a

Z-Order Curve with Query

Z-Order curves are used to encode multiple dimensions to one dimension while maintaining locality. This feature makes them useful for indexing multidimensional data such as geospatial data. In BigTable-like systems (Accumulo, HBase, Cassandra a z-order curve index can translate a bounding box query to a single range scan. As this example shows, sometimes the locality properties of the curve are very good and few points outside the bounding box are scanned. Other times though, many points outside the bounding box are scanned if using a single range.

This example was inspired by Mike Bostock's Quadtree example

Kindleberry "Paperwhite" Pi

Work in progress, I'll write this up properly when I'm done.

Almost all credit goes to @maxogden for putting me on to this and pointing me in the right direction for each of these items.

Prerequisites:

  • Raspberry Pi
  • Kindle Paperwhite freed from its locked down state (jailbroken) http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=198446
    • You have to downgrade your Kindle to 5.3.1 to install the current jailbreak; that's just a matter of getting the old version image, putting it on your Kindle via USB and telling it to install "upgrade". Then you put in the Jailbreak files, load the ebook and break.
  • Your kindle will be quick to detect an upgrade is available so it'll want to upgrade soon afterwards but the jailbreak will last but you have to reinstall the developer certificates so it's a bit of a pain but doable. Find all the instructions on the mobileread.com forums and wiki.

So, you want to run Chrome headless.

Update May 2017

Eric Bidelman has documented some of the common workflows possible with headless Chrome over in https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2017/04/headless-chrome.

Update

If you're looking at this in 2016 and beyond, I strongly recommend investigating real headless Chrome: https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+/lkgr/headless/README.md

Windows and Mac users might find using Justin Ribeiro's Docker setup useful here while full support for these platforms is being worked out.
