The magical explosion sent all of us backward with incredible force. Several more in rapid succession prevented us from getting to our feet, and when the chaos was over, Blackthorn was gone; teleported away to some other area of the Serpent Isle to gather his strength. The Avatar and I quickly made our way to the top of the tower and into the dark wizard's laboratory. Alembics, reagents, and vials of foul bubbling liquid sat beside human skulls and other strange and dark paraphernalia.
A cursory glance revealed nothing of use to us to determine his whereabouts, but after several minutes of investigation the Avatar located an iron lever tucked behind some books on a nearby shelf. After a few moments of uncomfortable silence, we decided to pull the lever and hoped for the best. A low groan emanated from behind a tapestry, and what was once a wall now provided us an entrance to a smaller chamber.
The room was empty save for a large portal framed in bronze and mounted upon a stone dais. The crimson colors lazily swirled about in a slow, hypnotic fashion casting an otherworldly red glow upon the stone floor. There was a strange underlying malevolence to the calming effects the portal had on us, as if you knew something was intrinsically wrong but could not muster the strength to do something about it.
"It is a portal to another realm, likely that of the Guardian or worse. There is something evil about this, Avatar. Let us leave here and continue our hunt! No good can come of this."
"A moment, Shamino, I do believe I can make out Blackthorn from within. Do you not see?"
As I drew closer to investigate, a white jolt of lightning arced out from the portal and struck me square on the chest. The pain was minimal, but I was lifted to my feet and sucked foward in moments. The Avatar ran towards me but it was too late. A bright red slowly darkened to black, and I ceased to exist.
[pagebreak]
A dull throbbing in my head forced me to open my eyes. I was alive. I slowly got to my feet and nearly fell back down in shock. My hands were the color of ash! I ran my fingers through my hair and examined the rest of myself beneath my tunic. I was certainly wearing my clothes, but this was not me. My skin was dark and my form lithe. I was trapped in someone else's body! A grumbling in my stomach gave me the impression I lost consciousness for quite some time, and after the initial realization I was far, far from home hit me, I decided it was time to do the only thing I knew how to do - survive. I believe I see a small village past the river. I will gather my mental and physical strength and investigate tomorrow.
[pagebreak]
The locals speak our tongue, but their choice of garb is far different. Their initial reaction to me ranged from of cautious distrust to outright hostility. I kept to myself, sleeping in the forest and feeding off the numerous deer and bear.
[pagebreak]
After rescuing a young child from a savage wolf I have finally become accepted amongst the villagers. They have given me the opportunity to join their hunting parties, and I have proven myself as a capable archer.
[pagebreak]
We encountered a ranger on the trail not far from our camp. Sadly he knew nothing of the rune of Spirituality, nor of the Avatar. He guided us to several new animal trails, and we had a polite conversation about camping technique. He carried a wooden box with numerous materials to build a camp, and claimed to have pioneered the approach himself. I will be sure to ask him how to construct such a thing.
[pagebreak]
The ranger has taken a liking to us, and my company in particular, and visits regularly to trade supplies, and has even agreed to teach me his technique for swiftly creating a campsite.
[pagebreak]
It has been quite some time now and no sign of the Avatar. I have confidence he will unravel the mysteries of the portal and rescue me. I have little choice and must wait. With my knowledge of woodcraft and hunting I will continue to help the villagers of a world not unlike our own.

The Art of Camping,
Part I
by
Lyne, a Ranger of the North

[pagebreak]

hat is more intriguing to you, gentle reader, the journey or the destination? When you have closed the cover of this book I hope that you will choose the former or at the very least come to respect it all the more.
There is truly something poetic and respectable to be said about spending some time in the wilderness. Nothing the big cities have to offer can compare to warming your hands by fire on a cold night, as Secunda casts its argent rays upon the forest floor. Have I piqued your curiosity? Good! The first step to mastery in woodlore is appreciation of what nature has to offer.
The standard camping kit consists of several parts which I will endeavor to explain in greater detail piece by piece below. You must practice the assembly of each component and know the parts as if they were extensions of your own body. At first try to make camp in a familiar place during the day. Do this for several weeks until you feel you cannot learn any more. And then do it again. Next you must try blindfolded, for expediate assembly does not come easy in the enveloping shadows of a moonless night. When you are truly ready, you will feel it. The wilderness will call to you, and you will answer in confidence. It is then that you know you are ready. Ready to begin camping!

[pagebreak]

he standard camping kit now found throughout Tamriel has evolved over the years, and much of its design comes eclectically from the Dunmer and Bosmer in particular. Their passion for mobility and woodcraft, respectively, has found its way into several items of which we will now cover in more detail.
The Tent
A common round tent designed of a thicker cloth that is especially good at being folded and stored in tight quarters. There are several thin poles that you will see collapse into the cloth itself, thus conserving space when returned to the camping kit itself.
Bedroll
A good bedroll is capable of keeping the body warm at night, and the protection it affords from insects and the cold ground is also an advantage. Some are capable of fitting two individuals comfortably, while others are designed for one. Depending upon the countenance of any ladies you are camping with, the single-use bedroll may be preferred.
Leather Wind Screens / Partitions
These are not common to find due to their weight and time to position, however on a scouting mission I once undertook for a nameless baron in a province I shall not share, I found myself relying on these to keep my position unknown at night. Indeed, these versatile screens serve as a reliable means of hiding your campfire from a distance, to block the fierce wind (especially in the north), to reflect heat from fire back to the campsite, and even as a barrier in front of your tent entrance. I will endeavor to discuss scouting in full within some other tome, but it of interest to note a wizard once gave me a potion known as Darkflame, which upon pouring over a newly constructed campfire, did not douse the flames yet turned them as black as night. I observed the fire as hot to the touch as any. Such illusory magic would fetch a high price among assassins, scouts and spies. The whereabouts of this magi and if any more potions were created is unknown to me.
Campfire
Building a well-constructed campfire is a skill even I have yet to master. The positioning of kindling, heavier logs, your surroundings, and even the weather all are important factors to acheiving excellence. The camping kit is well stocked with kindling and stones capable of generating a spark, and many areas are replete with dry wood of all shapes and sizes.
Cooking Pot
An integral piece that is used in conjunction with a flame to create stews and even to purify questionable water. This is in some cases preferable to direct cooking over an open flame to capture all of the nutrients your game has to offer. Most kits come with several stands that can be extended over a flame to prop up one or more pots and cooking devices. If the stand is positioned considerably high, it is also an excellent way to dry out garments.
Chair or Stool
Some camping kits come with collapsible chairs that are certainly more comfortable than mud or wet grass. It does require a bit of skill and patience to connect the thin wooden rods together to construct each chair, and there is always an inherent risk of snapping the wood or breaking the chair entirely.
Pelts or Fur
Optionally one may decide to roll up and store one or more segments of animal fur. This can add additional warmth and comfort to the interior floor of a tent. Although the pelts tend to be treated properly to avoid decay, I advise the camper to wash often in a clean river and hang relatively high over a flame to dry.
Traps
In some areas where wild animals or bandits are known to lurk, or when you are deep behind enemy lines, placing traps around your perimeter can save your life. Even a thin tripwire with metal scraps can act as an alarm can rouse you from your slumber and buy precious moments to escape or enter a defensible position. Due to the variety and size of traps, most do not come with camping kits that I am familiar with.

[pagebreak]

y now you should have the basic knowledge to begin camping, however it is important to be capable of protecting yourself from danger. Arms and armor are certainly vital; avoiding a battle or minimizing disaster entirely is something far more important.
Where should you make camp? How should you sleep? Is it safe to light a fire? All of these questions and more should be carefully considered and answered before you begin. Try to learn as much beforehand as you can about the area you intend to pass through. Locals, hunters or even pilgrims passing by are an excellence source of information. Knowing if a particular bandit gang, a warring tribe, or some foul beast is in the area can safe your life.
If you are traveling in the company of others, consider rotating your sleep into shifts so that one may stay alert and on guard while the other slumbers. Many a traveler has been found murdered in their own tent, their possessions stolen by a brigand. If you are alone, douse your fire after cooking has been completed and you are ready to sleep. Place a barrier near your tent entrance, and camouflage your tent with nearby foliage and grass if possible.
Establish your camp on a flat, level surface, away from dead trees or crags or cliffs. Water trickles down the sides of hills and mountains and can get you consdierably wet if not destroy your site entirely.

[pagebreak]

amping requires as much experience as it does common sense, and lacking in either is sure to bring a bit of disaster to your experience. The pleasure of sleeping under the stars, the aroma and taste of savory rabbit stew, and the satisfaction of knowing you and you alone created your own shelter is a rewarding outcome to the camper.
And so, gentle reader, I leave you to pursue this skill at your own pace. I wish you well in your travels. May the gods bless you, and maybe, just maybe, our paths will cross on some old forgotten animal trail in the middle of the forest.

The Little Book of Trapping
by Lyne, a Ranger of the North

[pagebreak]

any years ago, when I could count the number of gray hairs on my left hand, I was briefly under the employ of the Whiterun Forester's Guild, which reported directly to the Jarl's seneschal. Although now dismantled, the guild patrolled the nearby forests and sometimes beyond. In addition to scouting for brigand camps, killing off large wolf populations, and repairing bridges, we often enjoyed a lot of idle time on long journeys to hone our woodcraft skills. The aim of this text is to inform the reader on the subject of hunting and trapping, as depending upon the location and season the abundance of fruit and vegetable can be vary.
Although it would be impossible to list the myriad of traps available throughout Tamriel, I shall instead focus on one particular version of the common bear trap, modified a bit to catch both larger and smaller forms of pray for the typical adventurer in need of a meal at their camp.

[pagebreak]

n old Nord saying goes something like "The key to a man's heart is through his stomach". Although I have heard the male version is "The key to a man's heart is through his cold dead chest", I favor the Nordic matron version with respect to trapping. Know your pray's pray, and you will never go hungry.
While roaming the lands of Skyrim, I have found the following types of game and predators to be commonly caught when deploying and baiting traps properly.
The Plains, Forests
and the Reach
The forests, whether pine or otherwise, are home to a variety of hungry fauna. In these areas and even as far as the Reach and the mountainous terrain surrounding, the rabbit is likely the most common animal to be found. Fast and usually camouflaged, it is easy to miss them while on the hunt. Traps work best, and I have found no better bait than carrots or cabbage.
Deer are curious and have no qualms coming right up to your tent when food is present. Snowberries, grapes, thistle, lavender, giant forms of lichen, and even all types of non-poisonous mushrooms are suitable to catch a deer. Be careful when disabling your trap, as many times an inexperienced hunter will snap an antler or ruin the pelt, making it all very worthless in the end.
Goats are spotted occasionally, especially near the mountains or the Reach. I have found them to eat almost all things, although oddly enough garlic, cabbage, leeks, and tomatoes have had higher chances.
Fish of all kinds, cooked or otherwise, can have a chance of taking down a younger bear, although the larger ones will break the trap with little effort.
Honey is truly a curious item for a traveler to bring along with them. A wizened mage that once traveled with me set a dollop of honey down, trapping several bees that he then used for a reagent in a spell he was researching.
Many forms of simple plants and grass, such as wheat, tundra cotton, and mountain flowers have a chance of ensnaring the numerous wild pheasants, and sometimes berries can serve the same purpose.
All forms of raw and cooked meat have attracted predators such as wolves and even the mighty sabre cat. Take care when laying meat out and make sure you have enough provisions of your own before wasting food. Wolf meat is stringy and not suitable for consumption, however their pelts can fetch a fair price at some markets.

[pagebreak]

The Coasts and Marshes
Naturally, being closer to a water source can have its advantages. In the chilly north I have had some luck trapping horkers that dot the coast with raw fish, although often a mudcrab will get to the bait first. Cracking their shells can sometimes reveal a salty but edible meat that can even be used in soups.
Many of the types of bait mentioned above seem to have far lower chances of catching anything, and as a result unless you have some fish at hand, I would move closer inland to net anything substantial.

[pagebreak]

Snow and Ice
In the snowy tundras and mountains animals are harder to come by. Snow easily can render a trap invisible in minutes, and bait becomes frozen and unappealing. Despite this, having an optimistic attitude can often help. Ice wolves and bears roam unchallenged and will not think twice of eating a large hunk of meat in the open. Deer and goat can also be caught, albeit at a lower frequency. In short, I would stock up on food elsewhere and avoid hunting in inclimate weather if and when possible.

In addition to using traps, a trusty bow and arrow can often be a quicker solution to a hungry stomach. The hunter should attempt to gain the higher ground, looking down upon the prey from cover. Slowly make your way as close as possible, arrow drawn, and hope for the best. Using the cover of the forest is also helpful although it can work both for and against you; many of the trees are also a natural barrier and many a hopeful arrow has ended up lodged in the bark of a tree instead of a deer.

nce you have your meat, it is time to cook it. Savory recipes go beyond the scope of this text, however having a portable campsite and associated cookware are invaluable for this effort. Do not overlook commonly found vegetables and fruit. An example for those cold nights is to combine cabbage and apples into fresh water, stirring occasionally over low heat for a warming stew. One of my favorites is cooked venison and baked potatoes. Grilled leeks are also a delicious treat.
Trapping is a difficult skill to master and can sometimes save your life while out on an adventure. Do not forget to mark where you placed your traps and avoid game that has been left out for too long - fresh meat can save you from hunger, but it can't save you from food poisoning!
