Thoughts about a subject pool at Edinburgh

The Difference Pool

  1. Subjects: Population sample
  • N must be over 500, preferably 2,000
  • Ideally genetically informative
  1. Recruitment
  • Students
  • Public advertisements
  1. Content: There will be a set of basic features that will be tested at the outset
  • Need to compromise on this. Perhaps 2-hours of testing in the first instance?
  • NEO or equivalent + WAIS subset or equivalent
  • Nice to have a mobile, health, and other experience-sampling element
  1. Pool Durability
  • Some people will remain in the sample over time
    • As as result, they will be increasingly well described in terms of all sorts of psychological, demographic and possibly physiological features
  1. Access: Staff, PG, and UG students
  • Just need ethics
  • ALL data to be uploaded and shared
  • The subject pool will not be linked to any particular research topic, group or people, though it needs somebody to manage it
  • All data interlinked to avoid the need to test same features repeatedly
  1. Resources
  • New recruitment needed each year to remain active target n of 1000 or so.
  • Future studies may or may not pay participants, as per their possibilities and needs
  • Participants will be payed £5-10 to join the subject pool.
  • In addition to completing the basic measures, we expect some sort of commitment to be accessible for further measurements for some time
  • Implication: Need budget. £10,000/annum base funding from PPLS? (1000* £10) Starter funds = £20,000?
  1. Funding
  • PPLS and HSS
  • ESRC Economics wants to join in if it's got twins!
  • Generation Scotland?
  1. Benefits
  • Grants
  • Recruitment into MSc
  • Quality of MSc experience
  • Hons research 10×easier
  • Intervention studies/Pilot work for grants
