East Bay for Everyone
| |

The housing organization starter pack
| |

What is this?
| |

This is a how-to guide for starting your own version of East Bay for
Everyone.
| |

Why would I want a second East Bay for Everyone?
| |

You don't. Nobody does, actually. Even us. Especially us. But you are
probably interested in starting your own local housing organization based
off of or inspired by East Bay for Everyone. We've been around long enough now that people
from all over the planet are asking how they can emulate our success. We've
gotten thousands of units of housing approved, built, and
occupied by people who need it. Trashed the mythical
sanctity of single family neighborhoods by lifting their bans on apartments.
Fought for and won strong tenant protections. Radically changed the
narrative around how we can guarantee a universal right to the city.
| |

We've had some huge wins but not without countless losses and setbacks.
Yet, we're still here, kicking ass and taking names.
| |

We are East Bay for Everyone. And so can you!
| |

Why are we publishing this?
| |

Housing is a human right. Full stop, no compromise, no qualifications, no
bullshit. The housing struggle is happening all across the planet, and we as
a society must come together to secure this fundamental human right for all.
| |

But even so, we're only human. We can't be everywhere at the same time.
Plus we're organized in the anarchosyndicalist tradition, which means we
strongly believe that a decentralized, widely distributed network of housing
organizers, communities, and organizations is the best strategy for us to
find a long-term, permanent answer to The Housing Question.
| |

Internally, we've struggled with the question of how to bring our energy,
our political effectiveness, our power to far flung regions of the East Bay
in service of lifting up and amplifying people in need in their own
communities. | |

We also don't want to tell you how to run your organization or advocacy.
There is no one way to solve the housing question. A diversity of tactics is
also one of our core beliefs; we'd rather give people the tools for their
own self-determination than apply restrictive policies, protocols, and
structure. Let a million flowers go forth and blossom.
| |

Ok, I'm sold. What am I signing up for?
| |

In brief: a lot.
| |

History
| |

East Bay for Everyone started out with 6 of us meeting up in a coffee shop. In April 2019,
we reached 1,400 members with no sign of stopping.
| |
