AngleList profile: https://angel.co/matthew-liberman
My goal is to get a full-stack or backend position from which I can transition into ML or data science, preferably somewhere relating to language, biotech, healthcare, QS, or education. I don't want to remote for my first job. I'd prefer a full Boston salary but absolutely don't mind an 30k+ internship. All of these are much less stringent for queerer workplaces. It was suggested I want a small startup building something cool with minimal bureaucracy being ideal for ADHD.
Some ideal jobs:
- https://angel.co/edlitera/jobs/395980-programming-instructor-part-time-freelancer (less representative)
- https://diffeo.com/careers/irml/
Broadly, my main selling points are:
- really good at learning quickly (adapting to your specific company and to the future in general).
- broad horizons / non-traditional background means very creative and interdisciplinary problem-solving that someone more traditional would have missed
- emotional intelligence, generally great soft skills

I get excited whenever I see someone meaningfully working at the intersection of data and culture, particularly social media and creativity. My most recent project was crowdsourcing editing for a manuscript from social media.
I think you want the cultural competence and affinity for critically analyzing huge streams of information from my Literature degree, but more importantly, you want the ability to question assumptions of a non-traditional background. (That said, I started breaking things and learning Linux when I was 9). I'm interested in thinking about high-dimensional spaces and algorithms.
From the UX side, I just led an Open Space at DevOpsDays about how tools shape and interact with culture. I'm most interested in automating away everything but the most creative processes, particularly thinking about latency, friction and UI from a psych lens in general. The concept of computer-assisted intuition (~= exomemory + rapid feedback loops + smart dataviz) has been on my mind.
(my mom suggested this was maybe too informal)

I am intrigued by Forge.AI's mission. Sentiment analysis and topic modeling are especially aligned with my interests. I focused on linguistics in my Literature degree, and did exploratory projects using Project Gutenberg as a corpera. I am currently working on identifying low ROI clients based on the text of their first two emails.
I am most strongly familiar with Python (including NLTK), but am also familiar with Java and C++, and am happy to master them further. I deeply enjoy drawing on my broad horizons to come up with novel solutions to difficult problems.
Regarding teaching and teamwork, I also tutor CS and have facilitated authentic relating workshops, conflict mediation, as well as other soft-skill-heavy tasks. In terms of challenging myself, I've written a 50k novel novel in a month, sat through four 10-day silent retreats (100 hours of meditation for each course), and attend eight martial arts classes a week. I am eager to focus my attention on data science and NLP.

(For this one, my mom pointed out that their posting seemed relatively low-standards and amateurish, and made them look much less well-established than they actually are (founded 2014, 16 employees, two offices, $3M funding in 2017. https://www.perceptiveautomata.com/about-us/. we concluded that they were probably not valuing soft skills or emotional intelligence quite as much and were particularly geeky, with probably not more than one person being very good at getting funding and proud of it)
Within tech, I'm strongest in Python. Flask is my go-to; I'm about to switch to PostgreSQL for my next pet project. I'm also well-versed in JQuery and other modern JS frameworks. I appreciate high-level and systems thinking, and enjoy applying that to ensure pick optimal trade-offs for database design. Finally, I recently led an Open Space at DevOpsDays and am excited to further DevOps culture to ensure reliability and minimize toil.
Outside of tech, I'm strongest in pharmacodynamics and neurochemistry (e.g. 2nd messenger or eicosanoid dynamics), but more recently captivated by broader neuroscience, such as visual cortex theta waves. I've also been interested in the biology behind theory of mind from the psychiatric standpoint (ASD), and particularly cognitive science for the purpose of making tools that either replicate or mesh better with various cognitive functions. Working at the edge of intuition and replicating what used to be uniquely human is extremely appealing to me.
