Getting a Shell in the Docker Desktop Mac VM

2021 Update: Easiest option is Justin's repo and image

Just run this from your Mac terminal and it'll drop you in a container with full permissions on the Docker VM. This also works for Docker for Windows for getting in Moby Linux VM (doesn't work for Windows Containers).

docker run -it --rm --privileged --pid=host justincormack/nsenter1

Scaling your API with rate limiters

The following are examples of the four types rate limiters discussed in the accompanying blog post. In the examples below I've used pseudocode-like Ruby, so if you're unfamiliar with Ruby you should be able to easily translate this approach to other languages. Complete examples in Ruby are also provided later in this gist.

In most cases you'll want all these examples to be classes, but I've used simple functions here to keep the code samples brief.

Request rate limiter

This uses a basic token bucket algorithm and relies on the fact that Redis scripts execute atomically. No other operations can run between fetching the count and writing the new count.

# USAGE: ./dockerpsns.sh

# This lists containers, their init PIDs, and namespace IDs. If container
# namespaces equal the host namespace, they are colored red (this can be
# disabled by setting color=0 below).

Public DNS Pointing to localhost (127.0.0.1)

Available Public Wildcard DNS Domains pointing to localhost (127.0.0.1)

The best way to safely and securely use local domains pointing to 127.0.0.1 is to edit your local settings (/etc/hosts) and add your own settings. Keep in mind if you want to use subdomains, you need to enter all variations.

Example:

# Adding bottom of your current file /etc/hosts
################# MY LOCAL DOMAINS
127.0.0.1 local.com admin.local.com
127.0.0.1 domain1.com

Thread Pools

Thread pools on the JVM should usually be divided into the following three categories:

  1. CPU-bound
  2. Blocking IO
  3. Non-blocking IO polling

Each of these categories has a different optimal configuration and usage pattern.

Upload images to GitHub

  1. Create a new issue on GitHub.

  2. Drag an image into the comment field.

  3. Wait for the upload process to finish.

  4. Copy the URL and use it in your Markdown files on GitHub.
