Stamp Duty Land Tax

A TDD journey through a changing tax.

Step 1

In 2003, Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) was introduced.

In 2005, the zero rate threshold was raised to £120,000.

Step 3

In 2006, the zero rate threshold was further raised, to £150,000 in disadvantaged areas and £125,000 elsewhere.

Step 4

In 2008 the threshold was raised again, to £175,000, as a temporary measure.

However, this only applied to freehold properties or those with 21 or more years left on the lease.

In 2009, the £175k zero-rate threshold was extended to leasehold properties with leases under 21 years.

Step 11

In late 2014, the way SDLT is calculated changed completely.

Rather than paying the relevant rate on the whole price, you pay it only on the part of the price that exceeded the previous threshold.
