MRY Analysis

This is a quick summary analysis of updates to the ESG database since the original gaps analysis in 2020. Updates are due to scheduled and intermediate revisions to specific indicators using more recent data. This analysis presents summary findings and some explanations for changes in indicator age. The complete python notebook for this analysis is available here.

Here is a snapshot of the current ESG database looking at the most recent available year (MRY) of each indicator, compared to the database used in the gaps analysis from 2019.

Indicators by MRY

Year Original Oct, 2021
2009 2 2
2012 2
2014 2
2015 8 5
2016 8 3
2017 14 3
2018 27 9
2019 19
2020 22

As you would expect, we have more recent data for quite a few indicators that are maintained as active statistics, along with some improvements in some of the older series. However, there are still two very old indicators that have not been updated at all (see attached spreadsheet).

Here is the same summary but converted to “age” (in years) where 0 or “current” would be last year (2020 currently, 2018 originally), 1 would be a year prior, etc.

Age Original Oct, 2021
Current 27 22
1 14 19
2 8 9
3 8 3
4+ 6 10
average 1.46 1.67

In this context, the state of the database is more mixed. Some of the changes in the 0-1 year range are attributable to the fact that a handful of indicators that normally get updated in October-December are still in the pipeline, and are expected to be ready for the December push. In other cases, such as Child Mortality, the data are collected by other agencies and have been delayed by COVID. In still others, particularly the energy data from IEA, we’re still in discussions around licensing and/or looking for better substitutes (these are largely what account for the drops in the count of 3-year-old indicators and the corresponding increase in 4-year-old-plus indicators).
