Ideas here are adapted from Atomic Habits by James Clear

  1. Reflect on your habits from last module. What behaviors and activities were helpful for you? What activities and behaviors could be more effective for you? What processes would you like to try differently this module to become more effective at your work and as a software developer?
  • Behaviors that was helpful for me was coming out of my shell more and learning how to ask questions more. Activites that were helpful was keep practicing and having more practice options to do helped a lot for my understanding. Love CYOA! What could be more effective would be to believe in myself more and know that I can do this and not comparing myself to where other are in the mod. What process I would like to try differently is to know that I learn at a different pace and that I will need to outside of class time to go over the materials again so that I understand before moving on. I know that pre-teaching doesn't really work for me but re-teaching after each lesson is what I want to do differently.
  1. Setting intentions for this module: who do I want to be this module? What specific habits would help me get there? How are those habits tied to the identity of a software developer?
  • I want to be more confident in myself and the work I put out for this module. Specific habits that would help me get there would be to get a grasp on the learning materials because if I understand the learning materials then I will really understand what I am doing and will be more confident in my work. Meaning I will need to re-teach as much as I can and asking questions when I have them. These habits tied to my identity of a software developer is that once I know the material I can then implement into my work and be confident when someone ask me what I am working on and doing. It will make me a better software developer as well as a stronger one too.
  1. Incorporate temptation bundling to create a new habit by using this template:
  • After re-teaching, I will take a pom before moving on to my next task.
  • After sleeping for more than 6/8 hours (a restful sleep), I will go for a run in the morning before class.
  1. How to enjoy “hard” habits: Reframe your habits to consider their benefits rather than their drawbacks; name 3 habits that you have to do and explain the benefits of them. How do they further your goals longterm? How will they add to your processes as a successful developer? At the end of the day, how do they add to your life?
  • Re-teach: Understanding the content more and be able to really implement it in my work.
  • Exercise: Getting my body to feel better and once my body feels better and look better I think my mind as well will feel better and rejuvenated.
  • Ask Questions: The more I can ask questions the more help I will get help and understand what I need to do. It also helps me know what I need to specifically do and look out for.
  1. Environment design (optional 5-min. additional reading: Motivation is Overvalued. Environment Often Matters More): how does your environment set-up currently help you with your habits? How could it be improved to make it easier for you to follow through on your habits?
  • For work and school I have my desk in the bedroom away from everyone else and I usually have the door closed when I am working so that everyone knows that I shouldn't be bothered. Biggest issue would be exercising and getting outdoors with the pandemic. I don't like to create my own exercise routine so I need to find something that does it for me and that I can follow. I don't think I can improve anything in my enviroment to help wme follow through with my habits.
  1. “When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do.” Read this 4-min article on how to stop procrastinating. Apply the 2-minute rule to reframe 2-3 of your habits by scaling them down into the 2-minute version. How does this reframing help you think about shaping your new identity as a software developer?
  • This reframing helps me by looking at my goals at a smaller level and something I can tackle. This will help shape my as a software developer by having me look at a big project in a smaller frame and saying what can I do first that takes 2 minute or less and will help break out bigger problems into something smaller that I can handle so that I won't be overwhelm with everything being thrown at me all at once.

Hi Thao! I appreciate the reflections here and the ways you've broken down your habits to think about what will help you most grow. Keep it up!
