Quikcstart for i3 Tiling Window Manager

  • https://i3wm.org/

  • Initiate commands with Mod key

  • Mod key: Win / Alt depending on configuration

  • By default tiles horizontally

General

  • Mod + Enter: open Terminal
  • Mod + d: open dmenu to open other apps (type to search, arrows to select, Enter to open)
  • Mod + Shift + q: close app
  • Mod + Arrow keys: navigate between windows
  • Mod + j / k / l / ;: navigate between windows (left/down/up/right)
  • Mod + Shift + e: exit i3

Layouts

  • Mod + v: open next app vertically
  • Mod + s: stack layout
  • Mod + e: default layout
  • Mod + w: tab layout
  • Mod + f: full screen
  • Mod + Shift + Space: floating

Workspaces

  • Mod + Shift + Number: Move window to workspace
  • Mod + Number: Go to workspace

Resizing

  • Mod + r: toggle resize mode
  • Up: shrink vertically
  • Down' grow vertically
  • Right: grow horizontally
  • Left' shrink horizontally
