# The Tao of Vibe Coding
Prompt:
*Take Stephen Mitchell's translation of the Tao Te Ching and, inspired by it, write it about vibe coding, code, and creation. Give me just the first 10 parts.*
---
## 1
The code that can be documented
is not the eternal code.
The function that can be named
is not the universal function.
The nameless is the beginning of all programs;
the named is the mother of ten thousand features.
Ever desireless, one can see the mystery.
Ever wanting, one can see the manifestations.
These two spring from the same source
but differ in name;
this appears as darkness.
Darkness within darkness.
The gateway to all understanding.
## 2
Under heaven all can see the beautiful as beautiful
only because there is the ugly.
All can know the elegant as elegant
only because there is the hacky.
Being and non-being create each other.
Difficult and easy complement each other.
Long and short contrast each other.
High and low rest upon each other.
Voice and silence harmonize each other.
Front-end and back-end follow each other endlessly.
Therefore the sage coder
goes about doing without doing,
teaching without saying,
coding without forcing.
Ten thousand features rise and fall
without cease,
creating without possessing,
working without claiming,
leading without controlling.
This is why the work lasts.
## 3
Not exalting the clever
prevents people from competing.
Not collecting rare gems
prevents people from stealing.
Not seeing desirable features
prevents confusion of the heart.
The wise lead by
emptying people's minds
but fill their cores,
weakening their ambitions
but strengthening their resolve.
If people lack knowledge and desire,
then clever ones will not try to interfere.
If nothing is done, then all will be well.
## 4
The Tao is like a void,
used but never filled.
An abyss! It seems the ancestor of all code.
It dulls the sharp,
unties the knot,
softens the glare,
settles the dust.
Hidden! I don't know whose child it is.
It appears to precede the first commit.
## 5
Heaven and earth are impartial;
they see the ten thousand features as straw dogs.
The sage coder is impartial;
she sees the people as straw dogs.
Is not the space between heaven and earth like a bellows?
It is empty without being exhausted:
the more it works, the more comes out.
Much talk will of course come to nothing.
Better to hold fast to the void.
## 6
The valley spirit never dies;
it is the woman, primal mother.
Her gateway is the root of heaven and earth.
It is like a veil barely seen.
Use it; it will never fail.
## 7
Heaven and earth last forever.
Why do heaven and earth last forever?
They are unborn,
so ever living.
The sage stays behind, thus she is ahead.
She is detached, thus at one with all.
Through selfless action, she attains fulfillment.
## 8
The highest good is like water,
which nourishes all things and does not compete.
It stays in lowly places that others disdain.
This is why it is so near to the Tao.
In dwelling, live close to the ground.
In thinking, keep to the simple.
In conflict, be fair and generous.
In governing, don't try to control.
In work, do what you enjoy.
In family life, be completely present.
When you are content to be simply yourself
and don't compare or compete,
everybody will respect you.
## 9
Fill your bowl to the brim
and it will spill.
Keep sharpening your knife
and it will blunt.
Chase after money and security
and your heart will never unclench.
Care about people's approval
and you will be their prisoner.
Do your work, then step back.
The only path to serenity.
## 10
Carrying body and soul and embracing the one,
can you avoid separation?
Attending fully and becoming supple,
can you be as a newborn babe?
Washing and cleansing the primal vision,
can you be without stain?
Loving all people and ruling the country,
can you be without cleverness?
Opening and closing the gates of heaven,
can you play the role of woman?
Understanding and being open to all things,
are you able to do nothing?
Giving birth and nourishing,
bearing yet not possessing,
working yet not taking credit,
leading yet not dominating,
this is the Primal Virtue.
