Just a quick note for anyone checking this in future, after successfully building PythonMagick on Mac OS X Lion I was getting:

ImportError: cannot import name _PythonMagick

This can be fixed by changing the first line of __init__.py in PythonMagick (Usually to be found in site-packages, in my case /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/lib/python2.7/site-packages/PythonMagick) from:

from . import _PythonMagick

to

import _PythonMagick

I got it working. Note that in the future boost/1.59.0 will change to something else.
Download PythonMagick-0.9.12 and unzip/untar/unwhatevs

$ brew install --with-magick-plus-plus imagemagick
$ brew install boost --with-python
$ brew install boost-python

$ cd ~/Downloads/PythonMagick-0.9.12
$ BOOST_ROOT=/usr/local/Cellar/boost/1.59.0/
$ ./configure

Now you need to edit Makefile and pythonmagick_src/Makefile to include the boost library. You want to find two lines, one that starts with DEFAULT_INCLUDES and the other with LDFLAGS. Add boost paths to the end of those lines so they look something like this:
DEFAULT_INCLUDES = -I. -I$(top_builddir)/config -I/usr/local/Cellar/boost/1.59.0/include
LDFLAGS = -L/usr/local/Cellar/boost-python/1.59.0/lib

$ make
$ make install

Edit __init__.py in the PythonMagick package folder, I found it at /usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/PythonMagick. If you can't find the path, it should be at the end of the output of make install, on a line like: /bin/sh ./libtool --mode=install /usr/bin/install -c _PythonMagick.la '/usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/PythonMagick'.

You want to change the first line of __init__.py from:

from . import _PythonMagick

to:

import _PythonMagick

And that should do it!

@DWishR I was able to get through the instructions, but it still gives me "No module named PythonMagick" I noticed that even though I edited init.py, the corresponding init.pyc and init.pyo does not get rebuild when I import PythonMagick.

I had the same problem the BOOST_PYTHON_LIB was empty in the MakeFile. I just removed the -l{BOOST_PYTHON_LIB} when it appear in the MakeFile and it compile.

Due to changes in the ImageMagick API for version 7 and later, as of PythonMagick-0.9.18 there are some broken hooks that will raise Symbol Not Found errors when attempting to import the dynamic library, and possibly a KeyError('cacheThreshold') when attempting to import PythonMagick. In addition to the above steps (using homebrew to install ImageMagick, boost, boost-python etc). You may also need to apply the following changes. Here I have done a 'git diff' on my version (working on MacOS 10.12.6 with ImageMagick 7.0.5) against the current master branch as of late Dec 2017.

This version (PythonMagick-0.9.18) seems to fix the above errors:
I can do:

make
make install

on 10.13.6 (High Sierra), Python 2.7.15, resulting in output below. However, if I do python -c "import PythonMagick", I get:

PythonMagick is working on MacOS Big Sur 11.2.3 with Homebrew and python 3.9
here are my installation steps. After having already installed homebrew;

Install dependencies, including the llvm clang compiler which is required to use OpenMP, since XCode's clang doesn't support it.
brew install python3 boost boost-python3 imagemagick llvm
This will take a while.
Get source
git clone https://github.com/ImageMagick/PythonMagick
cd PythonMagick
Edit configure to correctly locate boost-python by replacing two instances of ax_python_lib=boost_python with ax_python_lib=boost_python39. My entries appear on lines 17992 and 18414. Your exact version of boost_python may vary in future, so check ls -l /usr/local/lib/libboost_python* first to see).
Set BOOST_ROOT (your version may vary)
export BOOST_ROOT=/usr/local/Cellar/boost/1.75.0_2
Run the configure script, telling it explicitly where to find the correct compilers (llvm clang) and which python version and boost libraries to use. Your versions for boost and python may vary.

If the above works, then all that is required now is make; make install

If the linking step fails during make with an error such as ld: library not found for -l-L/usr/local/Cellar/imagemagick... then this indicates that libboost_python wasn't found by the configure script; the hanging -l is meant to point to -lboost-python39 or similar.

Similarly, if you get 'symbol not found' errors at runtime in python, this also indicates a failure to link to libboost-python. Make sure you've run brew install boost-python3 and use brew doctor to check for any broken links. Also make sure you're not linking against any "legacy" libraries, especially if like me you upgraded to Big Sur over the top of Mojave or Catalina. You might want to wipe away libboost_python and completely reinstall it if this happens.

Go to anywhere other than the PythonMagick directory or its parent directory & run python3 -c 'import PythonMagick'. If successful, there should be no output / errors.
