Merge vs. Rebase vs. Squash

I get asked pretty regularly what my opinion is on merge commits vs rebasing vs squashing. I've typed up this response so many times that I've decided to just put it in a gist so I can reference it whenever it comes up again.

I use merge, squash, rebase all situationally. I believe they all have their merits but their usage depends on the context. I think anyone who says any particular strategy is the right answer 100% of the time is wrong, but I think there is considerable acceptable leeway in when you use each. What follows is my personal and professional opinion:

Terraform: Get current Git commit SHA

This will return the full Git commit SHA of whichever branch is currently checkedout.

Dump the snippet into terraform console (run from within a Git repo) to see for yourself.

Using terraform for_each and toset instead of count

Using terraform for_each and toset instead of count

Using terraform count and the pain of working with it

If you're using terraform extensively you probably ran into an issue like this.

This is a synthetic example but I still hope the problem is recognizable as something that also happens out in the wild.

First, you have a list variable (in terraform.tfvars)

I feel like conversations around laws and lawfulness in Scala are often not productive, due to a lack of rigor involved. I wanted to try to be as clear and specific as possible about my views of lawful (and unlawful) behavior, and what I consider a correct and rigorous way to think about laws (and their limits) in Scala.

Laws

A law is a group of two or more expressions which are required to be the same. The expressions will usually involve one or more typed holes ("inputs") which vary.

Some examples:

x.map(id) === x

Why I Recommend to Avoid Using the go-kit Library

Why I Recommend to Avoid Using the go-kit Library

There is a trending 'microservice' library called go-kit. I've been using the go-kit library for a while now. The library provide a lot of convenience integrations that you might need in your service: with service discovery with Consul, distributed tracing with Zipkin, for example, and nice logic utilities such as round robin client side load balancing, and circuit breaking. It is also providing a way to implement communication layer, with support of RPC and REST.

You can have a little tech debt for a short time. After that the bumbailiff will be up your bum.
#!/usr/bin/env bash
#
# The bumbailiff allows the team to take up a small amount of technical debt
# (TODOs in the code) for a limited period. After that period the script fails.

Kinesis Advantage 2 notes

(NOTE: Current and future versions of this and any other Advantage 2-related things I post will be at https://github.com/nicholasknight/adv2keyboard)

I received my Advantage 2 today. There's no full manual yet, even though keyboards are apparently arriving (hint, hint, Kinesis). The quick start guide leaves out the "power user mode", and there are some other quirks.

Update: A manual has been posted at http://www.kinesis-ergo.com/advantage2-resources/

It includes a dictionary for the key maps, but I know it leaves at least one possible key undocumented: it does not list f14, but I have successfully mapped my scrollock to f14 regardless.

It also mentions a firmware version (1.0.18) that doesn't seem to be available yet, with a new feature (status report playback speed).

This describes how I setup Atom for Clojure Development.

Atom Clojure Setup

This describes how I setup Atom for an ideal Clojure development workflow. This fixes indentation on newlines, handles parentheses, etc. The keybinding settings for enter (in keymap.cson) are important to get proper newlines with indentation at the right level. There are other helpers in init.coffee and keymap.cson that are useful for cutting, copying, pasting, deleting, and indenting Lisp expressions.

The Atom documentation is excellent. It's highly worth reading the flight manual.
