[15:21:38] <knowtheory> that guy, sometimes more trouble than he's worth.
[15:26:04] <tswicegood> knowtheory: lots of us programmer types are like that :-D
[15:26:56] <knowtheory> tswicegood: yeah, figuring out ways to work constructively seems important
[15:27:22] <tswicegood> not just important, imperative
[15:27:59] <tswicegood> otherwise: http://j.mp/V9mRV4 :-/
[15:28:38] <knowtheory> Yeah the interesting part is that some issues in programming are ultimately ones of philosophy or perspective
[15:28:56] <knowtheory> which are not technical issues to argue over, but ones that can only be hashed out by dealing with the intent of others
[15:29:12] <knowtheory> and communicating that seems to be a challenge w/ some folks
[15:29:29] <knowtheory> Yeah that thread is part of my diminished faith in humanity this week
[15:29:43] <knowtheory> (although not for the reason that HN seemed to be pissed off)
[15:33:30] <tswicegood> knowtheory: why is it diminishing your faith?
[15:34:55] <knowtheory> There's a particular lack of introspection and consideration prior to mobs forming to tar and feather others.
[15:35:07] <knowtheory> So, Steve and Corey's behavior is indeed unacceptable
[15:35:31] <knowtheory> but the way that they were called out on it is not constructive, it was just a mob looking for someone to burn in effigy
[15:36:04] <knowtheory> So, what remains unaddressed is the culture of negativity that are rampant in parts of the node and ruby community
[15:36:22] <knowtheory> all this post succeeded in doing is tearing down two guys who are otherwise standup dudes that people probably *should* look up to.
[15:36:30] <knowtheory> so, in the end, everyone's poorer for the experience.
[15:36:35] <knowtheory> and nobody's perfect
[15:36:51] <knowtheory> I wish there were more of a sense of "there but by the grace of god go i"
[15:37:06] <knowtheory> both on the end that someone could be a dick about your open source contributions
[15:37:16] <knowtheory> as well as on the "sometimes people have bad days and are dicks to others"
[15:42:44] <tswicegood> knowtheory: agreed
[15:43:02] <tswicegood> knowtheory: mind if I gist this conversation? (I'll redact your name if ya want)
[15:43:15] <knowtheory> Please feel free
[15:43:17] <knowtheory> and no need
[15:43:37] <knowtheory> I feel like someone needs to write about this, but the time isn't right at the moment
[15:43:52] <knowtheory> because so many people are caught up in the passion of hating on others |
