MacOS Sierrafrom the App Store (cancel out of the installation) -
Open Finder and navigate to
Applicationsdirectory -
Right click on
Install macOS Sierraand selectShow Package Contents. Drop down toResourcesand selectcreateinstallmedia -
Launch a Terminal window

Type
sudofollowed by dragging the path ofcreateinstallmedia -
Type
--volumefollowed by the path of the USB drive's volume -
Type
--applicationpathfollowed by the path ofInstall macOS Sierra.app -
The fully formed command line would look like this (newlines added for clarity):
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Sierra/ --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app -
Hit Enter to run the command followed by the root password (when prompted)

Wait patiently while the Recovery disk is being created.
- Shutdown your Mac
- Insert the USB stick/drive
- Power on the Mac and hit the Option key immediately and hold it down
- You will be presented with a boot menu with one of the options being your Recovery disk
