PostgreSQL command line cheatsheet

PSQL

Magic words:

psql -U postgres

Some interesting flags (to see all, use -h or --help depending on your psql version):

  • -E: will describe the underlaying queries of the \ commands (cool for learning!)
  • -l: psql will list all databases and then exit (useful if the user you connect with doesn't has a default database, like at AWS RDS)

Describing `belongsToMany` and `hasMany` methods in Sequelize

Defining Many-to-Many Associations in Sequelize

Reference: Sequelize docs on association

Let’s say we have two models: Films and Festivals

We know that a film can be shown at many film festivals and that, conversely, a festival can show many films. This is what is known as a many-to-many relationship.

Knowing this, we can set up our associations:

Audit logging via sequelize

We prefer to have audit logging in our services that leverage databases. It gives us clarity into sources of where ACL issues might originate as well as gives us a general timeline of activity in our application.

Audit logging is tedious to set up so this gist contains our latest iteration of audit logging support for a sequelize based service.

Install ImageMagick from source on Amazon Linux

I needed a newer version of ImageMagick than is available on the yum packages on Amazon Linux. I tried using the remi repo but it failed with dependency errors. Here is what I did to install ImageMagick with support for PNG, JPG, and TIFF.

download the most recent package

wget http://www.imagemagick.org/download/ImageMagick.tar.gz

uncomress the package
