There will most definitely be a group of people that would oppose killing all the AI. Yes, there's a bit of journalistic fluff, but the problem that Google is working on is very interesting and very real. What we're concerned about is AIs that are extremely good at finding loopholes in the safeguards we put in place. Specifically, we're concerned about the AIs that might anticipate us fixing loopholes in response to their actions.\n\nImagine we have a robot that can be given a goal, and will figure out on its own the best way to accomplish it. That's the premise behind general AI.\n\nSay we tell that robot to try to reduce illegal drug sales in a particular apartment complex. There are a lot of policing strategies that would work to various extents. But the robot is smart. It will figure out that burning down the entire building will reduce drug sales to zero.\n\nWhoops! We should have told the robot not to burn down the building. That's okay, as long as we're able to monitor its activities closely, and stop it when we see it grabbing a barrel of petroleum. We'll be able to patch it off before any real damage is caused.\n\nThe problem is that if we patch it this way, the robot will be forced to choose an inferior option, as it can no longer achieve 100% crime reduction by destroying the building.
