How to make a small tweak to free software

The target audience for this is people who are beginners at software engineering and using linux. A lot of the information here may be obvious or already known to you. The language involved is C but you do not need to know any C to read this tutorial. I used mg to write this blog post. I used vs code to edit the source code.

This post is also available on gopher://tilde.team:70/0/~river/tweak-free-software

If you use a piece of free software and it's 99% perfect but there's just this one thing it does that annoys the hell out of you.. you can in theory just fix it! Here's a look at what doing that is like. Hopefully it inspires you, or you pick up a could tricks on the way!

Step 0: Have a problem

Universal messaging/Profile protocol proposal

Universal Messaging/Profile protocol (Social email protocol)

Email gives freedom to choose the client software to the user. In an email conversation, multiple parties can be involved and they can use different email platforms and client software. Most of the email clients support the management of multiple email accounts from different platforms. All these are possible because there is a common protocol for emails and all platforms and clients just need to be compatible with the protocol. With social media emerging, communication patterns have changed and all communications are now platform-centric. There is no support for cross-platform interaction so there is a disconnect. This is happening because there is no common protocol and all platforms are working in silos hence the communication gap is increasing. To bridge this gap, we need to come up with a common protocol for all social communication.

Features

  1. Users will have a globally identifiable universal profile(UP) that enables the communication

My personal list of Rust grievances (September 2021)

September 2022:

This has spread to a far wider audience than I had anticipated - probably my fault for using a title that is in hindsight catnip for link aggregators. I wrote this back in 2021 just as a bunch of personal thoughts of my experiences using Rust over the years (not always well thought through), and don't intend on trying to push them further, outside of personal experiments and projects.

Managing a living language is challenging and difficult work, and I am grateful for all the hard work that the Rust community and contributors put in given the difficult constraints they work within. Many of the things I listed below are not new, and there's been plenty of difficult discussions about many of them over the years, and some are being worked on or postponed, or rejected for various good reasons. For more thoughts, please see my comment below.
