Getting a USB device to show up in a Docker container on OS X

Getting a USB device to show up in a Docker container on OS X

Some background

I was trying to get the Arduino IDE to work inside a Docker container on OS X. I was able to get the IDE working (see Getting X11 GUI applications to work on OS X with Docker), but I could not figure out how to make the USB port for the Arduino visible.

The solution

I first tried to directly map hardware serial port into the Docker container, doing something like this:

docker cleanup guide: containers, images, volumes, networks

Docker - How to cleanup (unused) resources

Once in a while, you may need to cleanup resources (containers, volumes, images, networks) ...

delete volumes

// see: https://github.com/chadoe/docker-cleanup-volumes

$ docker volume rm $(docker volume ls -qf dangling=true)

$ docker volume ls -qf dangling=true | xargs -r docker volume rm

Arch Linux btrfs install

0. Prerequisites

  1. Latest Arch Linux install iso because those have newer kernels and more bugfixes in btrfs.
  2. Have previous experience with installing Arch (like you can install arch with a blind fold).

1. Parititions

We will ne two of them, one for /boot and the other one will be a btrfs partition with subvolumes.

  1. /dev/sda1 - this will be /boot with vfat filesystem because UEFI or syslinux for legacy BIOS boot

Custom Arch Linux live USB

Setup

Install the dependencies for the archiso package:

(root): pacman -S make squashfs-tools libisoburn dosfstools patch lynx devtools git

I recommend archiso getting them from git, there is a package in the repositories, however, at this time of writing, it will not work with the instructions below. So, grab the most recent version from git and install it:

(user): git clone git://projects.archlinux.org/archiso.git && cd archiso
