Framing WDI

You're all adults with 20+ years of experience as learners, and you know your learning history best. The purpose of the following exercise is to examine your learning history to identify your perceived strengths and weaknesses as a student, so that you can make the most of your experience in WDI.

Exercise Objectives

  • gain self-awareness as a student
  • gain practical repetitions working in the command line

Directions

  1. Using the command line, cd into your ~/dev/wdi directory.
  2. Once there, touch a file called adult_learner.txt.
  3. Use your new command line shortcut, subl adult_learner.txt. This will open the file in Sublime Text.
  4. Using keyboard shortcuts, copy the questions below and paste them into adult_learner.txt.
  5. Take 20 minutes to answer the questions below, saving your progress frequently.

Questions

  • What habits have you developed over the years that you feel might hinder you as a learner during WDI?

  • How can you combat or minimize those habits' effects on your experience at General Assembly?

  • What learning tactics or approaches do you feel have most benefitted you as a student?

  • Can you think of any strategies to increase the output or viability of these approaches in the context of WDI? (No idea is too crazy.)

  • Finally, list two learning experiences from your life which at first gave you trouble but you overcame through perserverence.
