A1) BPCL decided to implement SAP R/3 against backdrop of the companies IT initiative that began in 1996 because the companies senior management realized that unless the procedures were streamlined and communications improved, faster decision making would be very difficult. The communication structure was hampering the integration of activities and there were some key problems such as high cost of traditional comminication, quick access to executives and the need to communicate with recipents. Also ERP was used successfully by other oil companies in world. SAP R/3 Also had a major advantage that it was the only ERP that was the only package that has a oil industry specific package and an India specific package.
A2) The ERP implementation was a part of Companies project CUSEC(Customer Service and Satisfaction ) which had to meet the challenge of an imbalance between refining and marketing. The fist phase of implementation began in April 2000. The Company existing network was redesigned and restructured and all its branches were linked to a central connectivity cloud. It was done through routers and switches which were in turn connected to servers and workstation.(Make the Table II in page 84 after this).
The server architecture included a Compaq proliant NT server, an SCO box, a sun firewall and other servers. The CISCO 2610 routers at each location led to a CISCO 1900 family switch for distribution. BPCL has also setup a data warehouse with business objects and query by mail.
The benifits were many, it successfully launched e-biz initiatives, like to allow I&C customers to track status of their orders online. It helped company to retain old customers as well as get new customers. It was now possible for the company to know the details of receivable inventories, which in turn made cash flow easier.
3) Prerequisites of a Successful ERP implementation is that the company should implement an ERP effectively and optimize each and every part of its infrastucture to run smoothly and streamlined. Also the hardware infracstucture and software should also be top notch such that there should be no lag in between the data retrieval.
In India ERP had a bright future, as we can make it out from BPCL which as successfully implemented the ERP and heavily gained from this decision.IF a standalone ERP system doesn't give apt result it could be used along with other IT initiatives for the maximum benfits. |
