[BOOKCLUB] THE 4 DISCIPLINES OF EXECUTION - DISCIPLINE 3: KEEP A COMPELLING SCOREBOARD

THE 4 DISCIPLINES OF EXECUTION

DISCIPLINE 3: KEEP A COMPELLING SCOREBOARD

  • Discipline 1: WIG for an organization and breaks it down into a set of specific, measurable targets
  • Discipline 2: Define the lead measures that will enable the team to achieve that goal
  • Discipline 3: Build a players' scoreboard that's designed solely to engage the players on your team to win

The impact of scoreboard

  • You will see a level of intensity in players' play
  • You will see teamwork, better shot selection, aggressive defense, and celebration etc.
The fundamental purpose of a players' scoreboard is to motivate the players to win.

-- Jim Stuart

Coach's scoreboard vs Players' scoreboard

  • Coach's scoreboard

    • complex and data rich
    • it requires careful study to figure out if the team is winning
  • Players' scoreboard

    • At any moment, team members can see if they are winning
    • Essential to motivating the players to win

Characteristics of a compelling players' scoreboard

  1. Simple
  • It shows the data needed to play the game
  1. Visible
  • Everyone can tell at a glance who's winning
  • The results become personally important to the team
  • It's seen by everyone
  1. Show both Lead measures and lag measures
  • The lead measure is what the team can affect (They can see what they're doing)
  • The lag measure is the result the team members want (They can see what they're getting)
  1. Tell you immediately
  • Tell whether you're winning at a glance
  • Five-second rule: tell within five seconds

To tell if you're winning or losing, you need to know two things:

  1. Where you are now
  2. Where you should be now

The 4 disciplines and team engagement

Engagement drives results? Results drive engagement!

People are most satisfied with their jobs (and therefore most motivated) when those jobs give them the opportunity to experience achievement.

-- One More Time: How Do You Motivate Employees? by Frederick Herzberg

The power of progress is fundamental to human nature, but few managers understand it or know how to leverage progress to boost motivation.

-- The Power of Small Wins by Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer

Scoreboards can be a powerful way to engage employees. A motivating players' scoreboard not only drives results but uses the visible power of progress to install the mindset of winning.
