BOOKCLUB] THE 4 DISCIPLINES OF EXECUTION

THE 4 DISCIPLINES OF EXECUTION

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Story of Jim and Store 334
    • they have created their goals, and scored but the WIG was in trouble

Five stages of behaviour change

  1. Getting clear
  • WIGs(what caused the issues? How do you solve?)
  • lead measures, scoreboard, schedule WIG sessions weekly, and hold them
  1. Launch
  • highly focused energy, trust 4DX, identify your models/potentials/resisters
  1. Adoption
  • training potentials, answer to resisters, clear the path for them
  1. Optimization
  • the team takes ownership of the process. Encourage team members!
  1. Habits
  • habits of execution. Help individuals become high performers and moving the middle

Moving the middle

How people deal with change

  • Models - the most engaged
  • Registers - the opposite
  • Potentials - potentially top performers, but haven’t arrived yet

Installing discipline 1: FOCUS ON THE WIG

Personal Brainstorming

To get things done X% faster:

What to measure?

  • What do I do everyday? Compiling Debugging Determine the issue Better error message Find the file to change Testing Writing Make it reusable Executing To not use Selenium? - Categorizing tests Coding Find the file to change Error handling

Top down or bottom up?

  • Leader: provides what matters most.
  • Members: have input defining WIG

WIG: Not how, but what

Installing discipline 2: ACT ON THE LEAD MEASURES

Invest your time for choosing lead measures

  • What could we do that we've ever done before that might make all the difference to the WIG?
  • What strengths oh this team can we use as leverage on the WIG?
  • What weakness might keep us from achieving the WIG?

Installing discipline 3: KEEP A COMPELLING SCOREBOARD

To make members motivated.

  • Usage of tools someone in the team made
  • Performance improvement
  • Internal users feedback (UI)

Installing discipline 4: CREATE A CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY

Weekly WIG session

  • Account: report on last week's commitments
  • Review the scoreboard: Learn from successes and failures
  • Plan: clear the path and make new commitments

Focusing the organization on the wildly important

Rolling out 4DX across the organization

The 4DX must be implemented...

  • As a process, not an event
  • With intact teams
  • By the leader

The 4DX installation process

  1. Clarify the overall WIG
  2. Design the team WIGs and lead measures
  3. Leader certification. (Scoreboard design, WIG session skills, Launch meeting preparation)
  4. Team launch
  5. Execution with coaching
  6. Quarterly summits

Bring it home

"Do you think 4DX would work in my personal life?"
