Technical Writing Benefits

I've come to realize recently that Software Engineers work way too hard. We work really hard to obtain the job, we work really hard to maintain the job. Yes, we get paid above and beyond what most people get paid; however, because we work so much, we hardly have time for the things we truly love. I believe we do not have to throw the baby out with the bath water though. I think there is a happy medium where we are getting paid well, but we are not overworking and we have time to use our income effectively.

See, we need to start building businesses of our own; however, that takes lots of time and resources. There are plenty of businesses that can be started with minimal up front capital ... say, 15K - 30K. In fact, less than that ... more like 5 - 10K. This is completely doable on a software engineer's salary, as long as one is not living extravagantly on the income.

The smart play is to live frugally, until everything is launched and start building multiple streams of income. Where does this income come from?

The first stream of income can come from technical writing. There is no downside to this, because, as a software engineer, one's income is pretty much tied to one's level of experience; however, we all know that experience doesn't mean anything if you can't show it off through good marketing. Sales is unnecessary with great marketing.

Technical writing is a hidden gem whose benefits are pretty vast yet, relatively unknown:

  • Potential to earn $1000 in first month
  • Practice & Hone Skills Remotely
  • An additional source of income
  • An organic source of motivation to continually upskill
  • Easy way to position yourself as an expert
  • A way to obtain consulting clients
  • A way to incrementally build up the content for a book
