Software Engineering :: Agile :: Courses :: Becoming an Agile Coach :: 1. Scrum Master or Coach

The Scrum master is the teams' first coach...
The agile coach is focused on all the teams at once, a step removed from the daily activities. The coach is slightly above the fray. This helps them focus on the system of teams and to identify unhealthy patterns across teams and develop training materials or recommendations to address it. The coach is actively working with leadership to draw attention to the larger patterns and solve widespread problems. The coach will work with scrum masters to solve any problems on the team that the scrum master hasn't overcome. This usually comes in the form of observation of both, the artifacts and the events. Generally, the coach will be a silent observer of the event and confers with a scrum master on any areas of concern the coach sees. For example, if the coach observes a problem with the scrum sprint planning event, the coach will offer suggestions to resolve the unhealthy pattern.
The coach will help with training, mentoring, and guidance for all team members from a neutral position outside the team. The partnership of the scrum master and the coach is one that can create a system of healthy teams.
The scrum master, while they are the first coach for their team, they are sometimes too close to the team to identify problems on their own.
- The scrum master is embedded within the team, watching the details
- The Scrum master is fully focused on their own team (engaged with perfecting the agile framework on their own team).
- They'll be dilligently supporting and facilitating the team's events and ensuring the needed artifacts are being developed.
- The scrum master is teaching the framework to members who may be new to the practice.
- Measures team velocity.
- Helps team attain high performance.
- coach doesn't interrupt during scrum
- post-scrum de-breif (coach shares her observations on what scrum master needs to do to make the scrum more effective for the whole team - this is known as leading from behind).
