Dear MHS Community,

I'm writing to let you know that MHS will be open tomorrow (Wed.), barring unforeseen changes in the weather between now and tomorrow morning. The forecast says it will be around zero with wind chills well below zero in the morning, but it will warm up into the teens during the day. There is no snow in the forecast and, at this point, most of the roads are clear.

However, I want to be very clear that the cold temperatures and wind chill tomorrow are real dangers. That means that students must take special safety precautions. Don't just do your normal morning routine. Do not come to school unless you are wearing: a warm hat, a warm scarf to cover your face, warm gloves, a winter coat with multiple layers underneath it, warm socks, and winter boots. If you are driving yourself, or someone else is driving you, make sure the vehicle is outfitted for emergencies in winter weather. This includes, at the most basic level, that the vehicle has been operating properly. Also make sure you have plenty of gas in the tank, wiper fluid, and a good ice scraper. Put a warm blanket in the car and make sure you have a charged cell phone with you.

Finally, just as MHS is operating independently in deciding to open, parents may make an independent decision about whether your personal circumstances dictate keeping your son or daughter home. Absences reported to the office by parents will be excused.

As I said in my message yesterday, although we share most the same concerns as other schools we are a small school with particular concerns and considerations. While safety is always an active concern, it is also important to weigh the present risks against the simple but real benefits of getting back to our work. Accordingly, I believe we can open tomorrowand operate safely. Please assume that we will be open tomorrow unless you hear differently early tomorrow morning.

If you have any question or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely, Nate
