(or*
)- hostname:
foo.example.com
- groupname:
webservers
- or:
webservers:dbserver
- exclude:
webserver:!phoenix
- intersection:
webservers:&staging
Operators can be chained: webservers:dbservers:&staging:!phoenix
Patterns can include variable substitutions: {{foo}}
, wildcards:
*.example.com
or 192.168.1.*, and regular expressions:
~(web|db).*\.example\.com
intro_inventory.html, intro_dynamic_inventory.html
'INI-file' structure, blocks define groups. Hosts allowed in more than
one group. Non-standard SSH port can follow hostname separated by ':'
(but see also ansible_ssh_port
below).
Hostname ranges: www[01:50].example.com
, db-[a:f].example.com
Per-host variables: foo.example.com foo=bar baz=wibble
[foo:children]
: new groupfoo
containing all members if included groups[foo:vars]
: variable definitions for all members of groupfoo
Inventory file defaults to /etc/ansible/hosts
. Veritable with -i
or in the configuration file. The 'file' can also be a dynamic
inventory script. If a directory, all contained files are processed.
Example INI inventory file:
[master]
35.153.159.105 ansible_ssh_user=buildbot
[worker]
18.232.97.176 ansible_ssh_user=ec2-user workdir=/home/ec2-user tasks=test-worker
54.92.185.209 ansible_ssh_user=ec2-user workdir=/home/ec2-user tasks=test-worker
34.238.169.197 ansible_ssh_user=ec2-user workdir=/home/ec2-user tasks=test-worker
3.94.204.183 ansible_ssh_user=ec2-user workdir=/home/ec2-user tasks=smoketest,mergetest
54.81.100.180 ansible_ssh_user=ec2-user workdir=/home/ec2-user tasks=smoketest,mergetest
There are three components. There are groupings of machines, in this
case master
and worker
, but can be whatever you want. Each host is
one line in the file, starting with a hostname or IP address, followed
by host variables. These variables can be used in commands and playbooks.
Example YAML inventory file:
all:
hosts:
mail.example.com:
children:
webservers:
hosts:
foo.example.com:
http_port: 80
maxRequestsPerChild: 800
bar.example.com:
http_port: 5000
maxRequestsPerChild: 1200
dbservers:
hosts:
one.example.com:
two.example.com:
three.example.com:
Reserved words:
hosts
- what follows is a list of host machines (which may include host variables)childen
- what follows is a list of subgroups within this groupvars
- what follows is a list of group variables
Subgroups will have their own hosts
, children
and vars
sections.
A machine can appear in multiple groups. Variables will come from all the machine's groups, with precedence rules, but it's good practice to define a variable in only one place to avoid confusion.
If bunch_of.hosts
is an inventory file, then you can write
ansible -i bunch_of.hosts all -a "some command line" -u some_user
If entries in the inventory file have a ansible_ssh_user
, that will take
precedence over "-u some_user". You can replace "all" with a group name to
select only certain machines to run the command.
Some commands are so popular that people have written Ansible modules for them, for instance
ansible -i bunch_of.hosts all -m ping
YAML; given inventory file at ./hosts
:
./group_vars/foo
: variable definitions for all members of groupfoo
./host_vars/foo.example.com
: variable definitions for foo.example.com
group_vars
and host_vars
directories can also exist in the playbook
directory. If both paths exist, variables in the playbook directory
will be loaded second.

Playbooks are a YAML list of one or more plays. Most (all?) keys are optional. Lines can be broken on space with continuation lines indented.
Playbooks consist of a list of one or more 'plays' and/or inclusions:
---
- include: playbook.yml
- <play>

{{ lookup('env','HOME') }}
{{ lookup('pipe','date') }}

{{ lookup('dnstxt', 'example.com') }}
{{ lookup('template', './some_template.j2') }}
Lookups can be assigned to variables and will be evaluated each time the variable is used.
Lookup plugins also support loop iteration (see below).
when: <condition>
, where condition is:
var == "Vaue"
,var >= 5
, etc.var
, wherevar
coreces to boolean (yes, true, True, TRUE)var is defined
,var is not defined
<condition1> and <condition2>
(alsoor
?)
Combined with with_items
, the when statement is processed for each item.
when
can also be applied to includes and roles. Conditional Imports
and variable substitution in file and template names can avoid the
need for explicit conditionals.
