WSL 2 Cisco AnyConnect Networking Workaround

Overview

WSL 2 uses a Hyper-V Virtual Network adapter. Network connectivity works without any issue when a VPN is not in use. However when a Cisco AnyConnect VPN session is established Firewall Rules and Routes are added which breaks connectivity within the WSL 2 VM. This issue is tracked WSL/issues/4277

Below outline steps to automatically configure the Interface metric on VPN connect and update DNS settings (/etc/resolv.conf) on connect/disconnect.

Installing pfSense on KVM in CentOS 8

We download the latest release of pfSense as a gzipped ISO, then extract it and pass it to virt-install to get the VM up and running. Interactive portions of setup are done with virt-install's native console redirection. This guide assumes you've already installed and configured KVM, and that you've created network bridges already.

Instructions

Find the latest release here.

Download the gzipped memstick-serial image from a mirror into a directory that KVM can access, then unzip it:

Download ISO from here - https://www.microsoft.com/sk-sk/software-download/windows10ISO
Insert USB storage drive into your pc
Identify which drive is USB mounted on by typing diskutil list command.
Format USB to work with Windows diskutil eraseDisk MS-DOS "WIN10" GPT /dev/disk2 (replace /dev/disk2 with the code you got in previous command).
Mount downloaded ISO hdiutil mount ~/Downloads/Win10_1903_V1_English_x64.iso
Copy files to USB (excluding install.wim as it is larger than 4 GB, FAT32 allows max 4 GB files) rsync -vha --exclude=sources/install.wim /Volumes/CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9/ /Volumes/WIN10
brew install wimlib
Use wimlib to split install.wim into multiple parts wimlib-imagex split /Volumes/CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9/sources/install.wim /Volumes/WIN10/sources/install.swm 4000

Download WSL2 Kernel
run wsl --set-default-version 2 in windows command line, so that all future WSL machine will use WSL2.
