Coding the Humanities is a programming course for all humanities students at the University of Amsterdam that pilots in the coming academic year (2013-2014). We are currently reaching out to other universities and private parties to join us. This site functions as the central meeting place for this project. The simplicity of the project is only appareance. Apart from the welcome message, the site has neither static content nor a traditional backend. Instead, the content is stored in gists and then parsed through a sinatra server and stored in redis. The AngularJS app simply connects to these services.
- Hardware Environment: Raspberry Pi, Arduino
- Software Environment: TBD
- Resposibilities: Project Leader
This project is a collaboration between the Rijksmuseum and the University of Amsterdam. The Rijksmuseum has a world renowned physical collection and an award winning digital collection (with a public API). At the moment, however, there is still little to no interaction between these two types of collections. The aim of this research project is to develop interfaces that connect the physical and the digital collection.

This single-page application grew out of my ongoing dissatisfaction with presentation tools (PowerPoint, Keynote, Prezi). Instead of treating slides as stand-alone containers for information, they are now full database backed objects. On of my future goals is to extend its functionality by integrating real-time audience feedback in the application.
- Software Environment: Rails, MongoDB, Elastic Search
- Development Tools: Sublime Text 2, Git, Sass, Haml, Nokogiri, Rspec, Cucumber
- Responsibilities: Full-Stack Developer, Front-End Designer
After using the first Medial Operations Site for a while, I repeatedly ran into the limitations of WordPress and PHP. In the summer of 2012, I decided to switch to a custom developed rails environment instead. This project aims to remove redundant repetition from the workflow of academic teachers and researchers. The idea is that an interactive course environment can be set up just by parsing a markdown-styled syllabus. Currently, I am still actively developing this project.
- Software Environment: Wordpress, BuddyPress, PHP, Javascript, Ajax, HTML, CSS, MediaWiki
- Development Tools: Coda, Photoshop
- Responsibilities: Front-End Developer, Deployment
- website: www.medialoperations.com (no longer maintained)
This project started out as a simple blog on which to publish my research. It soon developed into an interactive environment for the courses that I was teaching. I connected these sites through a BuddyPress social network. I used this platform as replacement for the inflexible Blackboard environment used at the University of Amsterdam. Apart from only hosting my own sites, I also allowed students and colleagues to host theirs and to contribute to the main environment.
