Gleaner (拾句) Privacy Policy — Kindle and optional read-only WeRead import

Gleaner Support

Gleaner (拾句) helps you save your own Kindle and WeRead highlights and display favorite passages in Home Screen widgets.

Contact

For help, email zhangzhishanlo@gmail.com. Include your Gleaner version, iOS version, and a brief description of the issue. Please do not send API keys, passwords, or private reading notes. Redact sensitive text from screenshots.

Import from Kindle

Use the Import button and select your Kindle's My Clippings.txt file in the iOS file picker. Your imported highlights appear grouped by book.

Import from WeRead

Open Settings → Data Import → Import from WeRead. Obtain your personal API key from the official WeRead page, connect, select books, and tap Import Selected Books. This optional connection is read-only and requires your own WeRead account.

The import controls, progress, cancellation, and results are at the top of the screen. Reimporting does not overwrite local edits or duplicate entries with the same WeRead source ID. If WeRead omits a creation date, the note is preserved with its date marked unknown.

Add a widget

Touch and hold the Home Screen, choose Add Widget, search for Gleaner, then select a size. Edit the widget to select its style and theme.

Disconnect and remove data

Disconnect WeRead in the import screen to remove the saved key from this device. Imported notes remain until you delete them. To revoke the key, use WeRead's official key-management page. Disconnect before uninstalling, because iOS may retain Keychain items after app deletion.

See the Privacy Policy in this same public page for full details. Gleaner is an independent app and is not affiliated with Tencent or Amazon.

Privacy Policy for Gleaner (拾句)

Last Updated: September 9, 2026

Overview

Gleaner is a reading highlights and notes app developed by Zhishan. It imports Kindle clippings and, optionally, your own WeRead (微信读书) highlights and personal thoughts.

Data on Your Device

Imported text, notes, book titles, authors, chapter/location information, original source IDs, tags, stars, and preferences are stored locally. The app and its widget share the local App Group container. We do not operate a server that receives this content, and we do not use analytics or advertising trackers.

This version does not implement cross-device iCloud synchronization. Device backups may include app data according to your Apple backup settings.

Optional WeRead Connection

Connecting WeRead is optional. You obtain your own API key from the official WeRead website and enter it in Gleaner. It is verified against WeRead and stored in the app's private iOS Keychain using device-only, when-unlocked protection. It is not stored in UserDefaults, highlight files, the widget's shared container, or our servers.

When you connect or refresh, your device sends authenticated requests directly to https://i.weread.qq.com/api/agent/gateway to retrieve your notebook list. When you explicitly select books and import, the device requests their highlights and your personal thoughts/reviews. These requests contain your API key and the requested book identifiers or pagination cursors. WeRead necessarily receives the requests and associated network information and processes them under its own terms and privacy policy.

Gleaner uses only read endpoints. It does not modify your WeRead books, reading progress, highlights, thoughts, or reviews. It does not fetch full book text. Reimporting is append-only: original source identifiers prevent duplicate entries and local edits are not overwritten.

The official WeRead website opens separately when you choose the key setup link; its account login and key management are handled by WeRead, not Gleaner. Never send your key to our support contact.

Disconnecting and Deleting Data

  • Disconnect WeRead in Gleaner's import screen removes the saved key from this device and clears the connection's last-import timestamp. Imported notes remain in Gleaner.
  • Disconnecting is not remote revocation. To invalidate the key itself, revoke it on the official WeRead website.
  • Delete individual imported entries in Gleaner to remove them locally. This does not delete them in WeRead; selecting their books and importing again may add them back.
  • To remove the app's local data, delete the app. Disconnect first: iOS may retain Keychain items after app deletion. Manage any device backups separately in your Apple settings.

Apple Services

App downloads and payments are handled by Apple. We do not receive your payment-card information. Apple services are governed by Apple's privacy policy.

Children's Privacy

The App is not specifically designed for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes and Contact

We may update this policy as features change. Questions: zhangzhishanlo@gmail.com.
