a simple git branching model

a simple git branching model (written in 2013)

This is a very simple git workflow. It (and variants) is in use by many people. I settled on it after using it very effectively at Athena. GitHub does something similar; Zach Holman mentioned it in this talk.

Update: Woah, thanks for all the attention. Didn't expect this simple rant to get popular.

NGINX tuning for best performance

NGINX Tuning For Best Performance

For this configuration you can use web server you like, i decided, because i work mostly with it to use nginx.

Generally, properly configured nginx can handle up to 400K to 500K requests per second (clustered), most what i saw is 50K to 80K (non-clustered) requests per second and 30% CPU load, course, this was 2 x Intel Xeon with HyperThreading enabled, but it can work without problem on slower machines.

You must understand that this config is used in testing environment and not in production so you will need to find a way to implement most of those features best possible for your servers.

NixOS Setup (Virtualized + Haskell + Gnome3 + XMonad)

Setup NixOS (Virtualized + Haskell + Gnome3 + XMonad)

Before you get started

This is pretty out of date now... you may want to look elsewhere

Newer guides than mine (mine is a bit dated and has a lot of rough edges):

Have you looked at these?

My own configuration file for GRUB2 to boot various live distributions of Linux-based operating systems, along with some system tools. I tried to include a lot of sample configuration entries, even if I don't currently use them, so it may help others. Exceedingly long blog post: http://tehfishyblog.logdown.com/chips/306146-a-homemade-ultimate-bo…
# Config for GNU GRand Unified Bootloader (GRUB) (2)

# Mostly only 'legacy' CSM/BIOS boot methods currently.
# Unable to boot loop entries with Secure Boot

Suspend and then hibernate after 60 minutes

I found a post about suspending and then going into hibernate that included a really clever script. Turns out that with NixOS this is even esaier to coordinate as you have systemd so can have a before and after service. I just include this in my /etc/nixos/configuration.nix file and nixos-rebuild; then a systemctl suspend or a close of the lid will cause the hibernate timer to be set.
