Philadelphia

Overview

Philadelphia — birthplace of American independence, solid Irish music scene, excellent indie bookstores, and surprisingly wild hiking right inside the city. Walkable historic core, good food, real character.

🎵 Irish Music & Pubs

  • The Plough & the Stars (Old City) — most reliable trad sessions in Philly. Sunday sessions with fiddles, flutes, the works. Best bet for sitting in with bodhrán or whistle.
  • Fergie's Pub (Center City) — old-school Irish pub, regular sessions listed on The Session.org. More casual, musician-friendly.
  • McGillin's Olde Ale House — oldest continuously operating tavern in Philly (since 1860). Not a session spot, but worth a pint for the history.
  • The Session.org — check for current session schedules near Philly:

📚 Bookstores

  • Baldwin's Book Barn (West Chester, ~40 min from Center City) — 200-year-old stone barn with 300,000+ used and rare books. Named one of the world's most beloved indie bookstores by Architectural Digest. A must-visit.
  • A Novel Idea (Passyunk) — well-curated indie shop, good for browsing.
  • H&H Books (Fishtown) — nonprofit bookstore and publisher, small-press and indie focus.
  • Book Trader (Old City) — used bookstore, cozy, near historic sites.
  • Brave New Worlds: Great comics and games shop in Old City. (Visited 08/03/26)

🥾 Hiking

🏛️ History & Walking

  • Old City is walkable and dense with history — Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, Elfreth's Alley (oldest residential street in America).
  • Free ranger talks at Independence Hall (book ahead).
  • Just wander and stumble into 18th-century America.

🦴 Mütter Museum

  • Mütter Museum (College of Physicians of Philadelphia) — famous medical history museum with anatomical specimens, pathological anomalies, vintage medical instruments, and the bullet that killed Lincoln. Not for the squeamish, but utterly fascinating.
  • Timed entry: 50 guests per half hour. Book ahead.
  • Hours & admission: https://muttermuseum.org/visit/hours-admission/
  • Dual admission ticket available with the Historical Medical Library next door.

Philadelphia's Magic Gardens — Isaiah Zagar

Other Philly Public Art Highlights

  • Clothespin (Claes Oldenburg, 1976) — 45ft steel clothespin at 15th & Market, across from City Hall. Iconic.
  • Smith Memorial Arch (1897-1912) — West Fairmount Park. Nine busts, three figures, the Whispering Wall. Grand Beaux-Arts monument.
  • Fairmount Park generally — one of the largest urban park systems in the US, full of sculpture.
  • Association for Public Art has an interactive map: https://www.associationforpublicart.org/explore/public-art/

🎲 Board Game Cafe

Notes

  • Good for a long weekend trip. Fly into PHL or take the train (30th Street Station is right in the city).
  • Center City is very walkable — public transit (SEPTA) covers the rest.
  • Best trad sessions seem to be Sunday afternoons at The Plough — check schedule before going.
  • Turrell Skyspace: Check the sunset schedule and book ahead — viewings are only Sundays and first Fridays. The Chestnut Hill West SEPTA line gets you there from Center City.
  • Magic Gardens: Budget 1-2 hours. Wander South Street afterward to spot more Zagar mosaics on buildings.
