Okay, that may be the reason. But for something completely different: I sent an individual query to the BBC and I was told they do not provide the URLs to their livestreams. Period. Although I said I use VLC and iTunes for listening, they presume I use a closed system the streams for which only the manufacturer can fix, so they advise me to contact the manufacturer… :(

They should take a look at HiByOS ... To add a station there you have to manually add a URL and the same in many other distro's with basic station management like Moode.

I'm sure they think all radio users use some form of station database. To be fair I do use community radio browser.

I can't understand why they won't give the URL's people will figure it out anyway so they are just building up frustration and they don't understand that we use direct URL's.

What concerns me about TuneIn vs The BBC is that URL's would have to all be manual ... If that ruling applies to the whole industry, that station databases are allowing for copyright infringement (they aren't) ... It means all radio station databases are at risk. Even Radio Garden, if Tune In is "allowing piracy" (it's not) then Radio Garden would be too (it's not).

Under that situation, all internet radios would stop working and stations would drop millions of listeners. This misunderstanding about copyright infringement needs to be halted before it infects the whole industry.

Station databases are aggregators and station finders they aren't methods of copyright infringement. BBC vs TuneIn could kill an entire industry and end up harming the BBC period, if they want to geo fence fine do that, but leave our internet radios alone.

The main innovator in radio in the 1920's (being the BBC) could ultimately end up killing radio listening 100 years later because they couldn't get user data and got upset with a station listing database? What a mess, they'd never be forgiven.

Ultimately I think this does escalate to all station databases and the BBC started it, they and the labels need to know what harm can come of all this and how big and passionate the radio community is around the world. End the tit for tat.

Anyone want to explore a solution without URL's, to create a local server on a pi that can take Sounds output and run a http stream.

Almost like a proxy for actual devices that can't run the Sounds app? That way the BBC get their data and the internet radio can still receive the service.

And someone in R&D at the Beeb could also explore a proxy that allows for a compromise on this because these devices need URL's to work.

I run radiofeeds dot co dot uk and may have a useful tool for Linux command-line users who use mplayer to listen to radio from the UK and Ireland. I just don't know how useful it is / would be and would like to able to gauge the interest. I literally only just did it because of a suggestion from one visitor. I have something working already. Please could I ask the author, bpsib, to contact me through my website to discuss how it works and how it might be useful to the Linux community! :)

My belief is it that .m3u currently works only within the UK.
.pls.m3u currently works within and outside the UK but comes with the hourly message that the stream will stop on March 22 wherever you are.

I am getting the BBC message on both these sets of urls for BBC radio4 FM. I tried the

I am in the UK and a taxpayer that is about to advocate stopping BBC funding.
Please post if you find how to access BBC streams.
I have also emailed BBC Sounds to ask how they can satisfy those with open source/raspberry pi based media systems.
It might help if others also tried to contact the BBC. Go the BBC sounds website>help>recent changes....> any item on list. There will then be a contact us button. This will deliver a standard load of useless crap but the email will have a link you can use to try to reason with an intelligent person. I have not had a reply to this yet.

I am using http://stream.live.vc.bbcmedia.co.uk/bbc_radio_fourfm. At 8.00am this morning March 19 I did NOT notice the message about March 22. This suggests there is something regional about this or it depends on your ISP.
I will check again tomorrow. If the stream does get cut off on Monday then I too will be complaining to the BBC.

I haven't heard the message on the new URL's nor does the message show as text in mpc status as it did previously.

I have an Ocean Digital radio and will try the new direct URL's on Monday. Interestingly Ocean Digital's sets have a web server on board to add URL"s without needing an aggregator.

Prompted by the helpful comments here I did an additional test. These urls may well be OK for listening live.
In all cases that I heard the message it was from my recording of radio using streamripper (on raspberry pi). So I just did a test where I was listening to radio4 at 12:00 (using MPD) while also recording radio4 via streamripper. I did not hear the message on the live/MPD stream but it was on my recorded stream. So it looks like I need a different system for recording! I am retired and hence don't want to have to set an alarm to listen to the 8am news. Hopefully all will be clearer Monday. Thanks again for the useful input. Mike

Listening live on RPi using mplayer at 9:00 am I did not get the March 22 message. Using http://stream.live.vc.bbcmedia.co.uk/bbc_radio_fourfm . Consistent with earlier observations.

Now if only the BBC took their meta data seriously! Comparing their streams to commercial broadcasters the BBC are woefully behind. With commercial meta data aside from real artist and song data it's even possible to identify when a commerical is playing.

Mike there is a perl script called get_iplayer for "recording". I used it in a Python script to search for and download the shipping forecast. I haven't touched it for a while but it did do the job. My original idea was to "timeshift" a station to my local time zone so I would get The World at One at 1pm my time.

cvlc should also be able to transcode a stream to a file on a chron job.

It would probably help if more users were to complain to the BBC. I have done so but will be ignored if there are few others.
The radio4 url above worked fine 8am this morning with no message.
Meanwhile the BBC response to my enquiry/complaint was 'It sounds like you will be unable to listen to the streams on your set up'. So I asked how we escalate this to Ofcom. Response (quick) was 'We’ll try to respond as quickly as possible, but it can sometimes take some time to look into technical matters, so we apologise if we’re not able to reply as quickly as you or we would like'.
They may be waiting to see how many complaints they get.

I can confirm that that R4 worked OK this morning at both 8am and 9am. Monday, March 22. No message, no interruption.

Reply to imranha the World Service should be at http://stream.live.vc.bbcmedia.co.uk/bbc_world_service. This may not work outside the UK or not at 56kb/s.

Hello everyone. First, this list of links is much appreciated.

Second, I'm in the US and can confirm that I can listen to and using VLC.

Unfortunately, these don't work on my preferred solution: Synology AudioStation which has streaming radio from ShoutCast and allows for custom stations.

Any suggestions?
