"Does "offer better value" mean "commercialising the [UK] audio streams on BBC Sounds" ?"

Might be the English equivalent of the French pour mieux vous servir. Pour mieux vous servir this supermarket will now be open until 6 pm (it used to be open until 8). Pour mieux vous servir we have simplified our pricing (prices will be going up again)...

I got the notification on the Sounds app today, it wasn't very helpful in understanding what's about to happen.

All the stuff written about this seems to be about the music stations, they are not picking up that local stations are affected.

"Expats complaining about losing stuff they don't pay for" ... Come on now, grow up, we likely have higher paying jobs than what you could get in the UK so we can pay, 10x whatever they ask ... So let us pay to keep local radio?

Did I miss something? It just looks like you pulled that out of nowhere.

Sorry, my mistake, I thought you were making a general jab at UK residents or the BBC; I went back and did a non exact search and found what you were referring to:

https://james.cridland.net/blog/2025/bbc-radio-4-feedback/

There were lots of clips of expats complaining a bit that they would lose access to stuff they don’t pay for;

Expat here

I pay for my parents' TV licence. They do not even watch TV.
They prefer to walk, read papers, and do the gardening than watch the box. But they do listen to the radio.

I do not live in the UK. I have always been happy to pay. The licence fee is good value for money, and I appreciate it much more after having live in many places in the world.

I would not mind paying an extra fre for BBC local radio that I can listen to abroad.

I won't pay for their "internationally" focused programmes. I can get the world service from the ABC.

So, yes, let's grow up.

I suspect it is more a matter of rights than money. The additional cost of serving a few expats is almost certainly trivial. Local radio is very music-heavy; that's where I think the problem is. I wonder if there are local radio news podcasts which will remain available internationally?

@duracell80

duracell80 commented Mar 13, 2025

Definitely sounds a lot more about money than rights. Music is played on all stations including the world service. That right there about music is smoke and mirrors.

If music licensing is a problem, factor it in to the monthly subscription that would be charged to international subscribers or blank out the music "due to rights restrictions we're not able to broadcast Charlie XCX, but you can listen on alternate platforms".

Make up the costs of music licensing by adding commercials on international streams either/and while the music is playing for national listeners and at the start of the stream play. While Vroom Vroom is playing serve me a commercial for The Home Depot, some shady pillow company, a local car dealership and Mc Donalds.

It's not rocket science is it? Commericals.

Nonsense happening at the moment. It's like saying oh we can't run BBC America because we have to pay to license Star Trek and those damn ExPats don't pay for it so why they complaining. Uuuuuuuugh.

Meanwhile we got BBC Earth because Disney are paying to run the same commercial every 7 minutes.

Someone ain't using the old grey matter at Broadcasting Hose.

Question I've got though is what date are the streams being turned off so we can capture the moment of isolation from the mothership.

Desert Island Streams.

He's not right about domestic TV Channels. We can stream BBC News and Sky News freely on commercially supported platforms like Pluto, and even paid ones like Peacock.

And we get BBC Earth which shows some stuff we're not legally allowed to watch on iPlayer like the Wild Series (Wild Japan, Asia etc).

It's not adding up, they could find a way to keep local radio operating commercially outside of the UK, you just geoblock those streams from working in the UK so UK listeners can't get to the commercial streams. Dhurh.

@Vangelis66

If you were to put an ad banner within the BBC Sounds app, then the (overseas) rights holders would want their money from all the music radio streams because they’re commercialising them.
If you were to market “listen to BBC Radio 2!” on the BBC.com website (which has ads on it) then the rights holders would want their money from all the music radio streams.

Creators of music (and other pieces of artistic value) should, of course, be rewarded for their work, especially when that's the only way they make a living; but does the term "rights holders" also encompass the "Big Three" (Sony ME, UMG, WMG) - and other smaller - Record Companies? Those greedy multinationals should realise that with the "status quo" (BBC Music Radios being available globally), their artist clients get global exposure (through the BBC) without them (the companies) having to spend a single penny for promotion - and this has been going on for, say, the last twenty years or so?

Case in point the excellent UK artist Sam Fender; I was first introduced to his talent via listening to BBC Radio 1 and 2 in the last few years, then, as an appreciation, I recommended his work to other friends/relatives here; we all then subsequently streamed his songs both on free (YT Music, Spotify) and paid-for (Tidal, Deezer) commercial audio platforms, all these do pay royalties back to the respective artists; "Sam Fender" (this is just one example here 😉) got some additional revenue due to his songs being listened to quite far from the UK (southern Europe), via BBC Sounds; I and other (UK) music lovers would have remained unaware of his music had it not been for the BBC Music Radios; alas, not all UK artists make it big "globally"; if they do, then it's, of course, easier to discover their music via "international" outlets, but I hope you do get my drift...

Definitely sounds a lot more about money than rights. Music is played on all stations including the world service.
That right there about music is smoke and mirrors.

I tend to agree with that; at the end of the day, what it boils down to is expenditure cuts: get rid of ALL internationally available audio streams (and the associated CDN costs), keep just the WS one (which, AFAICT, is listened to mostly by non-British) and the R4 one (to give UK-expats a "semblance" of a connection to "home"), with advertising in them to compensate for the global streaming costs 😞 ...

Many of our last comments here are only tangibly relevant to "BBC Radio Streams" (as in URIs for them); sadly, soon this gist will have to be renamed to "BBC UK Radio Streams" 😢 ...
Why, in this world, must everything be about money? My own country's state TV and Radio broadcaster (subsidised via taxes) has ALL Radio (including music stations) made available freely to all the diaspora, in 256kbps MP3 mind you, and this is an economy many times smaller than the UK's; thinking out loud, I'd say the BBC is just being "cheap"...

I’ve been following this thread and I find it very informative. As an American we don’t get most of the music played on BBC.

If it wasn’t for BBC London I would never have heard Mama’s Gun who I love. Even some American acts are bigger on BBC then here

Also we in America need good honest news journalism which I feel we can get from BBC but we don’t get locally here. I know BBC World News is staying but we really it today

@Vangelis66 As someone who successfully fought internal discussions in the BBC back in 2008 about shutting off global radio streaming... this is absolutely not the case. The CDN costs are chump change for radio. When compared to BBC iPlayer, they're a rounding error. There's really no appreciable costs here when viewed from the BBC's budgets.

This is simply being driven from two immovable facts:
a) the BBC wishes to earn ad revenue from non-UK audiences (to help pay for the programming)
b) the BBC cannot put advertising on anything that offers rights-encumbered output like music radio, without paying full price for those rights.

I'd just quietly remind us all that the BBC has made no announcement about the future of BBC domestic music radio outside of BBC Sounds (and BBC.com) - they haven't mentioned whether BBC Radio 2 will disappear from TuneIn, for example, overseas. All we know is that the first-party platforms that the BBC controls - and wishes to monetise - will no longer have BBC domestic radio.

Thank you for providing much needed insight where most of us are left tilting at windmills :)

I have recently spent a few hours learning about the copyright laws of my country and the surprising simplicity of the legislation de jure and the complex reality of “intellectual copyright holders” de facto. There is no easy solution to any of this that's for sure - throwing a "just put advertisements in" doesn't work if they can't agree on how to target them and how much the advertisers should pay.

Also we in America need good honest news journalism which I feel we can get from BBC but we don’t get locally here.

Keep in mind even if the World Service and R4 remain available via BBC Audio, an authoritarian minded government can prevent its residents and citizens from obtaining foreign propaganda. They can withdraw rights to broadcast the World Service on HDRadio, AM Radio and SiriusXM as warning shots they could target online radio first.

Particularly if said authoritarian government deems public broadcasting to be woke, believes in freedom of speech on one hand while also on the other hand deeming certain types of free speech as propagandist.

Talk radio that broadcasts such propaganda could be shut down even if commercial, such as LBC. Least we forget such purveyors of propaganda gave us labor rights and the weekend. They could target streaming of LBC, Sky News and BBC World (TV) while allowing GBNews to stream freely.

Attacks to freedom of listening could also come in the form of pulling transgender artists from streaming platforms, the world is getting darker day by day.

"The BBC cannot put advertising on anything that offers rights-encumbered output like music radio"

This can't be true, they just don't want to pay to play (even if we throw money at them). They could easily spin up a commercial version of Sounds and make it profitable, a million Brits in the US, how many in Spain etc? We have BBC America and movies are rights-encumbered.

BBC.com serves ads alongside all kinds of content that could be rights-encumbered like live text coverage of sporting events.

I used to listen to (Australia) Nova radio through their own ios app when I was in Belgium.

This worked well for many months until they went for Geo-IP based at streams. Overnight all the local Aussie ads that were in English were now in French and completely useless to me. So, I stopped listening to that app and change to a direct M3U stream. A few months later I did go to Myers and buy something! :-)

The English language adverts were useful to me given the amount of times that I fly back and forth to my family in Australia.

The GeoIP based advertisements were unusable because wherever I was in the world these were read out in languages that I didn't understand, and had no intentional of understanding, and sold products that were meaning this to me.

If emigrants are not their target audience for local radio content, then who is? Are foreigners with no UK connection interested in what happens in Wales or in an English county like Berks., or Surrey?

Worthwhile noting:

The BBC's announcement has been quietly edited to include the following two things:

I'm in the UK. Why am I presented with BBC Audio instead of BBC Sounds?
It is likely you are using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) and are accessing BBC.com, which is intended for audiences outside the UK. If you disable your VPN, you should be redirected back to bbc.co.uk, intended for UK users.

...and, perhaps more excitingly...

BBC’s UK national music stations are available to listeners in certain countries outside the UK through TuneIn.

The latter would suggest that TuneIn will continue to carry the stations in some form (but not local radio, nor 5 Live, both of which have gnarly rights issues to do with sports rights).

BBC Local radio, which I listen to all the time, is the only regular way I'm introduced to new music and artists. Radio has always and will always be the gateway drug and music companies need to help facilitate that by allowing radio platforms to no be encumbered by penny pinching, people don't discover music very much on Spotify and YouTube, sure you might get played a new track once when your playlist or album ends but you need 2-3 listens of pop music for it to catch.

Sad that the greedy record companies suddenly realise that internet radio has a global reach. Which I think is one of the greatest developments of the last decades. But for the record companies it’s an excuse to suddenly extort a lot more money from radio stations, because they can be listened to outside of their country of origin. Of course this levels out. For every French listener of British radio there are British listeners of French radio, and so on. But the big record labels don’t see it that way. They see it as an opportunity to squeeze more money out of internet radio stations.

Unfortunately the attack on global radio is not just greed right now and feels darker than 2007. I think it's important to keep this in mind that we must hold on to all kinds of public service broadcasting right now.

It's the local stations most would like to keep access to, would those still be available on TuneIn? They are at the moment. I just don't buy the rights argument, I just don't.

But it all does come down to money and we really need to be on guard to archive the last broadcasts at the moment. It feels off, the vibes are off.
