Akamai is a global CDN company and serves both the UK (with UK-exclusive servers) and overseas (with global servers, that "happen" to also work from within the UK); the international/overseas Akamai servers have -ww- in their domain names and the corresponding URIs have the /ww/ subfolder, whereas the UK-exclusive servers have -uk- in their domain names and the corresponding URIs have the /uk/ subfolder; "lsn.lv feeds" will generate the UK or global version of an Akamai-delivered live audio stream based on the absence or existence of the &uk=1 URL query string parameter at the end; e.g.

I am still confused on what the recommendation / requirement is.
The Sports Extra link does not work on my device in the UK connected directly to a UK ISP if it is lacking the suffix, "&UK=1". @bpsib seems to concur, having updated the link. There is text at the bottom of the list mentioning the need for the suffix for UK only content but, if it is necessary to make a link work, it makes sense to add it to the link.

I just want to understand what is recommended and if I can't comprehend this, then others who may not have English as their first language or are less technically adept may also struggle. This is what I want to avoid. I want to hear streams here in the UK and allow my friends around the world the same privilege. I am proud that my contribution to the licence fee supports others' ability to hear this rich and rewarding content.
@bpsib do you want to add a recommendation to the gist regarding use for UK and non-UK resident users? I remain confused as to which to use. I have used the lsn links because of the comment that they may be compatible with more devices and because they are shorter!

320 kbit/s is also available overseas. I do typically listen to 96 because it sounds fine. Whether you use a as-hls-ww.live.cf.md.bbci.co.uk or as-hls-ww-live.akamaized.net or a lsn.lv link, you will get the same data. The lsn.lv is an extra step that will possibly give you an updated Pool if it changes.
It is probably not scalable to as many listeners as they planned to have. (I suspect they don't have that number as people use various apps instead.) Shoutcast comes from one server. It is possible to set up multiple in a round robin fashion. But Akamai already has a distributed network they can rely on without setting up their own. They wait to prepare half a minute of data, hence the latency, and upload to Akamai, which then multiplies across their infrastructure. There is a World Service stream that is 56 kbit/s only.
UK media player users can access the unofficial streams (without metadata), but forcing listeners to use an app creates data that the BBC can monetise. The vast number of internet radios made useless are just collateral damage, which the manufacturers failed to make enough fuss about.

I've only been keeping half an eye on this thread because I'm in the UK and not having any issues but I just tried a link with VPN (PIA NL server location) and the links (e.g. https://lsn.lv/bbcradio.m3u8?station=bbc_radio_two&bitrate=320000) work fine, sport related streams will likely be blocked though.

Now, it's possible that this trail was split, so CBeebies Parenting was only heard within the UK, and something else was heard outside the UK - but I'd doubt that (not least, because the trail for CBeebies Parenting was 34 seconds, a non-standard length).
