Project - Engrenages élastiques
A few years ago I had realise several versions of an electroacoustic piece entitled Engrenages élastiques. The basic principle of this piece was to create a continuity between micros and macros structures by the exclusive use of a rythmic and energetic pattern derived from a rebond behavior and its reversal. I had so conceived a huge polyphonic structures (21 voices) in which differents colors were all animated by a same principle : rythmic glissando realised in evolutions from a few milliseconds to above 12 minutes. The purpose was to highligth a phenomenon which is particular for several reasons. First, the rythmic glissando is a directional object which, in this sense, lead the listener to expect something, create a waiting with which it’s possible to play. Secondary, it represents a kind of border between what we identify as periodic and what we identify as non-periodic. At least, the principle of acceleration/deceleration contains the idea of phase transition between rythm, texture and pitch. In this way the structure consisted in a superposition of several layers based on differents speed cycles, but my musical knowledge and the tools I was using at that time never permit me to achieve something really convincing. My topic now is not to re-write this study piece, but just to keep is basic principle, which has an highly potential in my opinion, in order to compose a new music. Jérôme Bertholon
