Building realtime application with DynamoDB (and potentially any database with an operation log)

This was built and written in 2016. While the project didn't gain much traction, the intro post is kept here for posterity.

Building realtime applications is hard.

A scalable solution to this problem involves many cumbersome steps:

  • Hooking into replication logs of the database servers, or writing custom data invalidating logic for realtime UI components.
  • Adding messaging infrastructure (e.g. RabbitMQ) to your project.
  • Writing sophisticated routing logic to avoid broadcasting every message to every web server.
  • Reimplementing database functionality in the backend if your app requires realtime computation (e.g. realtime leaderboards).

Create JWT Token Header Using Unix Command line tools ONLY!

Pseudocode:

Y = Base64URLEncode(Header) + ‘.’ + Base64URLEncode(Payload)
JWT = Y + ‘.’ + Base64URLEncode(HMACSHA256(Y))

The steps called out here should work on a Mac as well. The only thing that might be different is the sed command used below. Instead of using -E, you will have to use -r to run sed with extended regular expression support

sentry setup with docker-compose

In order to run this image do: docker-compose up -d to get all up. On first run DB initialization and initial user setup is done like so:

First start a bash in the container: docker-compose exec sentry /bin/bash. Then, inside bash, do sentry upgrade wait until it asks you for an inital user. When finished exit the bash.

When in doubt check with docker-compose ps if all went fine.

This Windows 10 Setup Script turns off a bunch of unnecessary Windows 10 telemetery, bloatware, & privacy things. Not guaranteed to catch everything. Review and tweak before running. Reboot after running. Scripts for reversing are included and commented. Fork of https://github.com/Disassembler0/Win10-Initial-Setup-Script (different defaults). N.…

Ubuntu on Acer Aspire Switch

The problem

What's the problem with this tablet? Why can't I just insert the USB and mash F12 until it boots? The tablet is made to run Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 only. Some absolute genius at Acer decided to put a 32-bit UEFI on a 64-bit system, which no reasonable Linux distro supports out-of-the-box.

NOTE: This guide focuses on installing Ubuntu alongside Windows. If you're trying to replace Windows, then I assume you know enough about Linux to know which parts to change.

What works:

  • Keyboard
