Garbage collection with zero-cost at non-GC time

Garbage collection with zero cost at non-GC time

Every once in a while I investigate low-level backend options for PL-s, although so far I haven't actually written any such backend for my projects. Recently I've been looking at precise garbage collection in popular backends, and I've been (like on previous occasions) annoyed by limitations and compromises.

I was compelled to think about a system which accommodates precise relocating GC as much as possible. In one extreme configuration, described in this note, there

The Testable Documentation Manifesto

One of the problems with tech documentation (api, installation instructions etc) is that they get stale. APIs change, software and plugins alter their interface and commands, and websites go away.

To solve this, I propose we write our documentation in a way that can be executed, or verified.

Luckily, I wrote blaze to execute codeblocks inside of markdown, which means that with a little help from a few common unix tools, we can solve this problem.

9front tutorials

9front tutorials

Current as of 9front-5966.df2c352ae695

This is a collection of notes on how to complete tasks I've found myself commonly performing while using 9front.

Note that most of what is here is straight from various parts of the 9front FQA, just ordered differently. If not from the FQA, I'll provide the source under the header for the section.

As I'm in the process of learning Plan 9/9front, feel free to comment with suggestions or corrections.

Rust concept explanations

My explanation of the main concepts in Rust

There are three main concepts with Rust:

  1. Ownership (only one variable "owns" the data at one time, and the owner is in charge of deallocating)
  2. Borrowing (you can borrow a reference to an owned variable)
  3. Lifetimes (all data keeps track of when it will be destroyed)

These are fairly simple concepts, but they are often counter-intuitive to concepts in other languages, so I wanted to give a shot at

How to create a "DMG Installer" for Mac OS X

Creating a "DMG installer" for OS X

A DMG Installer is convenient way to provide end-users a simple way to install an application bundle. They are basically a folder with a shortcut to the Applications directory but they can be customized with icons, backgrounds, and layout properties. A DMG file (.dmg) is a Mac OS X Disk Image file and it is used to package files or folders providing compression, encryption, and read-only to the package.
