Component "shopping lists"

Necessary tools

  • Temperature controllable soldering iron, small tip and large flat chisel tip for drag soldering.
  • Hot air guns are very useful for getting chips off if you fuck up.
  • Tweezers
  • Flux Pen - from China on ebay
  • Magnifier, I find x20 to be the best, you can get cheap stupid glasses on ebay, this is what I use.
  • Digital Multimeter
  • EAGLE PCB design software: for viewing the .brd and .sch (board and schematic files when building and troubleshooting).

Necessary links

  • Pichenettes Github - contains all the files/boms/etc for the MI modules (click download zip on the right hand side of this page)
  • Prebuilt firmware hex files

General Advice

  • Order more resistors and caps than are on the bom, because they will ping off from your tweezers and you will never find them again, also there are price breaks that mean large quantities are not that much more than small quantities.

If you are new to Mutable builds, you could follow this guide

  1. Only mount PSU parts (last page in Eagle)
  2. Power it and check all voltages
  3. Mount the STM and check for shorts; if all is well, flash it with Windows, proper original programmer, and pre-built .hex file
  4. Mount the rest of the chips... check for shorts
  5. Mount resistors and caps... check for shorts
  6. Mount Jacks and pots... check for shorts
  7. Check for function... correct floating / wrong parts
  8. Mount the panel... power it and check for hot parts
  9. Let it run for 1 hour... let it cool all the way down
  10. One more test... PARTY !!
