Hybrid crit/status melee weapons can build around both Blood Rush (BR) & Condition Overload (CO) to inflict a large number of status effects on the enemy to get a big boost in damage from CO while keeping the melee combo counter high enough that BR can give a large number of crits.
A typical hybrid build would look like: Blood Rush (for crits from combo counter), Condition Overload (for damage from status effects), Drifting Contact (for ease in building the combo counter and better status), Pressure Point (more damage), 2x 60% / 60% elemental damage/status mods (for more status and damage), and the last two slots can be tailored to fit your tastes or cover the weapon's flaws. Good mods for the last two slots include Healing Return (healing from status effects, a very good fit here), Berseker (more speed fron the BR crits, very good for applying status quickly), Reach (more range for applying status and damage to more enemies), more elemental damage or 60/60 mods (increase status and damage).
Weapons that support such builds usually have reasonable Critical Chance (CC) > 14% and good Status Chance (SC) > 20%. Additonally, having good speed (> 1.1) and good range can free up precious mod slots. It's usually easier to mitigate poor speed and range through mods or gameplay than it is to mitigate low crit or status chance in such builds.
When building a hybrid Zaw, it's common to use the Ekwana Jai II link for its 14% CC and 25% SC - using a Plague or Sepfahn strike will bump those numbers a little. The 14% CC is enough for Blood Rush to push into reasonable crit range when the combo multiplier is 2x or more. For status, the 25% SC lets two 60/60 status mods and Drifting Contact's 40% give (1 + 0.4 + 0.6 + 0.6) * 0.25 = 0.65 or 65% SC. 100% SC is not a requirement and is even overkill since such builds have enough speed, range and multihit combos to proc status reliably even at 50-60% status chance.
