Intermission Reflections

  • Please list the top 3-5 industries and companies you'll pursue in your job search as of right now.

I am interested in learning more about tech opportunities in the music/entertainment industry. I have reached out to a few contacts that know a bit more about the music/entertainment industry and are well connected therein. I am hoping to set up a few calls over break. Beyond that I am less concerned about industry and more focused on finding a culture match.

  • Why did you pick the industries/companies that you listed above? How do they relate to the values and goals you have for yourself in your job search?

The music and entertainment industry stuck out to me because it combines many of my interests, seems to me to have many opportunities for the implementation of accessible and exciting technology, and has many of aspects that require working with people from many different backgrounds/worlds. Again I do not know enough about what is available in that world in terms of software developement. However, I don't want to limit my search to a specific industry because above all I want to find a company that fits into my vision of my future. I need to have mentorship and opportunities for collaboration and learning from other developers. This is something that is extremely important to me, but especially in my first real job as a dev.

  • How does your LinkedIn currently reflect your goals and industry interests? What changes will you need to make to your LinkedIn to better reflect these?

I think that I have a lot of previous work experience that shows that I like to work on teams and collaborate with others. I am planning to refresh my "about me" statement to further reflect how imporant this is to me.

  1. When you've worked towards a goal in the past, what systems or tools have been helpful for you in accomplishing that goal? How could you adapt those same systems/tools to use while at Turing?

The tools I find most helpful when working towards a goal, is a well-rounded understanding of what is needed to make reaching that goal possible, a strong support system behind the scenes, mentorship throughout the process (or at least someone who is experienced in something similar to compare notes with or turn to when I'm stuck), and determined focus on the task(s) at hand.

  1. As you start this new career, what is one of your strengths and how do you know?

One of my biggest strengths is my interpersonal prowess. I have found, time and time again, that being able to connect with people - client, coworker, boss, teammate - is the key to collective success. In Event Planning, without proper communication and person to person connection, the relationship and planning process are going to be strained. If I can't connect with the client to understand what they want out of the event, I can't give them what they want. In the service industry, being able to form a relationship with your team leads to flawless services and efficient work. Being able to quickly know what people need and want from me on a project is an invaluable skill to me. It also allows me to assess if I am the right person for the job or if I need to reach out to someone to collaborate.

  1. Describe how you work best (conditions, environment, preferences, etc.):

Open communication is the most important aspect for me. Being able to have candid conversations about workflow, issues, success, etc, is an absolutely necessity. I do well with a certain level of autonomy that can be held accountable and supported by team work. It is extremely important to me to have others trust that I am capable at getting the work done, to have others trust in my abilities. I need to feel like I am being heard in the workplace or on the team.
On a more basic level, I like to work with music in the background - a silent workspace becomes far more distracting to me. I like to have my physical location feel like a productive space. I could never work on my bed, I prefer to be at a desk or in a space that feels designed for getting work done.

  1. As you start this new career, what is your greatest area of improvement when it comes to your professional skills?

Upfront, I need to develop my technical skills in software development. Beyond that, one of the biggest changes for me personally is going to be transitioning into a more 'traditional' job with a M-F work week. I have worked in the service industry for so many years, and have never actually worked out of an office. I think it will be a big transition for me to get used to the idea of a more structured work week. I understand that the tech industry is rather flexible in this regard, but it will still be more structed than the odd hours of bars and restaurants.

  1. How will developing a deeper understanding of your strengths and working preferences benefit you as a software developer?

Knowing my strengths will help me assess every project from the standpoint of understanding which parts of the project will be easier for me and which parts will take a bit more effort. It will help me understand where I might possibly need assistance before beginning a project and facilitate asking for assistance upfront or giving me a chance to prepare more thoroughly. Understanding my working preferences will help me create the most productive workspace for myself and make me more efficient overall during my worktime.

  1. Describe the vision you currently have for your career after Turing:

I still have so much to learn about the tech industry, but what comes to mind upfront is mostly based on what I envision my lifestyle to be after Turing. My goal is to have a very strong work/life balance and financial stability. These are two things I have not been able to cultivate thus far in my professional life. On a more career focused note, I am hoping to be a part of something that can effect long lasting change. I'm not completely sure on what that means just yet, but I am confident I want to be a part of something bigger and I want to be able to help people through my work.
